7 Weeks...

If I dwell on the fact that I haven't gone out for any significant exercise in 7 whole weeks, yeah, that's great to think about, that'll depress the crap out of me. It's not a good thing. I've gained like 15 pounds; just haven't had the desire to care about my diet too much. I have somewhat by trying often to keep out excess sodium... but I've had way too much ice cream. This stoopid tibia fracture, I keep saying, is so close to being okay for rehab hikes... but not yet.

And so today is the 49th straight Zilch Day (50 total days come this evening at dusk) without a single run or a single very short hour-long hike. Nothin'.

Sad.

But...

Happy Birthday, Jerry!

It is now time to get yourself into some water - a swimming pool, river, lake, etc. and do some (very) gentle stretching and extensions.

By all means, thrash around with your arms, swimming to and fro to build up some stamina and wind, but leave the leg work out of it for now.

Confine yourself to stretches, particularly the calves and hamstrings, while in the water receiving support for your weight and body density. Also, extend your toes, stand on tippy-toe with the water level at your chest, holding on to something.

Three reps of ten stretches each. It's been seven weeks -- time to start getting the muscles, ligaments and cartilage ready to do their job. If you can manage twice a day, morning and late afternoon, more power to you. Nothing more strenuous after 6 pm than bending an elbow to sip your gin and tonic and damn few of those, please.

Start to taper off from any analgesic you've been taking on a daily basis. Hiking is just around the corner. Jogging and track running is in the forseable future. Trail running -- not for a while yet.
