just a run

In the world of sports -- NY Mets suck. Lost again. Nice. Suck a little more? Worse than the Montreal Expos Washington Nationals yet?

NJ Devils, in Game 7 of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, gave up 2 goals in the last 90 seconds of the game to lose to the Carolina Hurricanes. That was downright depressing. Devils are having quite a difficult time getting back to the Stanley Cup Final. Why do they so often bomb it in the first round?! Their freakin' website's already looking forward to next season. Got to wait a whole frickin' year for the playoffs again. Yay. Losers.

Well, it might not be football season but it's football season! UEFA Champions League -- Man U. v. Arsenal today on ESPN! I'm so glad European football is on TV here 'cause MLS is just plain pathetic. Silly Americans.

In political news -- nahh, I'd better no go there.

In health news -- exercise is important... so I went running...

The North Face trail running shoe -- good for use in the Appalachian Mountains ... but seriously, they are rather small compared to the Rocky Mountains ... Sierra Nevada are sweet, too. Would definitely use 'em in the Alps, that's for sure. One thing's for sure -- Jerry Garcia or Bob Weir or Phil Lesh or Blaise Compaoré probably never went running in Liberia, Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, Pyongyang, Probably the same with Brent Mydland. At least that's my gut feeling. I could be wrong. I mean, there were a lot of drugs at Grateful Dead shows and the good Lord above, He knows I did my share!

2 Days Since My Last Run

11:20 a.m. - 76° - mostly sunny

April's last run. Time and weather were both nearly identical to two days ago. Not nice out there. VERY nice for laying on the beach or in your backyard to soak up some sun and get some nice color goin'... but DISGUSTING for a run. I'm an idiot for not going earlier in the morning. Twas an almost crisp 54° around 8 in the a.m.... with no sun gleaming, very little sweat, and very little energy loss from heat, 'twoulda been so ideal, perfect short-sleeve running. Almost -- dew woulda made grassy/weedy parts of the trail wet and that woulda gotten my shoes plenty wet, but... but why'm I fantasizing about what woulda been?!

Not the best run but not a bad run. I did succeed in adding at least 30 seconds... which I didn't need to do because that was only to get me back up to 25 minutes. Eh, I forgot and added at least a half minute which I accomplished but not without some mildly horrendous internal complaining and that desire to just quit my run and eat donuts, what does it matter, get fat, be typically American. NO! It's good to beat those thoughts back and push forward, keep running, focus on music, just go. When I hit my End Cue, though -- stoppage, bent over, hands on knees, gasping for air. That, thankfully, didn't last long but when I resumed moving towards getting off the trail, I wasn't moving too quickly. Again I just wanted to sleep on the trail. But I made it back and while tired as all heck, I'm looking forward to my next run, my first in May.

The Doors -- Strange Days (1967) (album cover, backside)

Should I even type anything about this album? It's classic. I might dig their debut a little bit more but the two together make a great hour or so of listening. This is a band that needs more listening to by my ears. Thanks to The Lost Boys soundtrack with a version of People Are Strange by Echo & The Bunnymen, I may have heard the song a thousand or two times too many in this life. Also mega-overplayed are Love Me Two Times and When The Music's Over... but they're still good, especially when put on the shelf for two or three years. Take it out after such an absence and it's good again. Since it didn't have the same radioplay as those three aforementioned hits, the rest will always be welcomed. Twas great to listen to this today a whole bunch of times in the past few days.

Doors Run

Yada yada yada, life goes on. I got nothin' to type about. Politics? Bite me. Mets? They suck. College football tomorrow? Little girls playing a man's game.

Finally some beautiful weather in the Lowcountry of South Caro-freakin'-lina. Twas actually kinda cold this morning. Had the sliding door open and the low 60's temp outside filled most of the house. Sleeping under the comforter was needed unlike pretty much every single night since I got here. Around 80 was the high temperature today but gettin' down to the low 60's at night is just sweet. I'm not made for constantly needing air conditioning, definitely not made for temps over 90. Yuck. Sick. Pathetic. I'm not sure how anyone can stand it. Give me cold!!!

Just a fine run. Yup, that would sum it up. I'm happy to be back up to 20 minutes. Somehow I've gotta keep up 20 minute (or more) runs without dropping back down. Also gotta make sure I eclipse my Total Time for August. Not doing so would be BAD.

Yet again another album that is on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. Not only is it in the top 500, it's in the Top 50! Not that that really means anything but I suppose it's interesting. I mean isn't "great" technically completely subjective when it comes to art? In this case, I'd probably agree with them and methinks it does deserve to be ranked so high. There just isn't a bad or even a mediocre song on here. Well, that's what I think... and, of course, what I think is always right... of course... always.

Been way too long since I've listened to a Doors album and it's definitely time to explore their discography again. Unfortunately, other than their classic 2 CD Greatest Hits collection, there probably isn't an album as good as this one. Still plenty of great music!

Rude Awakening but Feeling Good!

· Run Time --- 10 minutes 10 seconds (+0:36)

· Total Time On Trail: 67 minutes
· Temperature: 29ºF (-2ºC)

· Trail Time in October -- 13 hours 29 minutes

____(starting Oct. 1)
· Weight Loss Goal -- 24 pounds (11 kg)
__________· So Far -- 4 lb.

A much easier run this afternoon compared to my last one. First four minutes was a piece of cake. Then I started wanting the first song to hurry up and get over already and onto the next one. Got through that and the next few minutes were okay. But again, with a minute, minute and a half left in the second song, all I wanted was for it to get finished, wind it up, will you? Sheesh! Finally my sounding cue and I hit my time. Whewww.

I felt pretty beat but was able to keep walking instead of needing to stop with hands on knees, pleading for normalcy. Last time my lungs were in a minor state of feeling like ehty were on fire. Holy cow. This time my lungs felt fine. About 90 seconds after I stopped running, I was even able to stop walking to do a little Conga with Gloria Estefan. Yeah,
all was definitely so much better!

Trail Music...

starring: Cheech Marin, Eric Roberts, Julie Hagerty, Robert Carradine ... also with Buck Henry, Louise Lasser, Cindy Williams from Laverne and Shirley and she was in American Grafitti, Andrea Martin, Cliff DeYoung... or is that Cliff De Young? Directed by two people? Huh. By: Aaron Russon and David Greenwalt. Now... was Uncle John's Band written by Robert Hunter? Certainly these fellows played on it: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Keith Godchaux... or was it Pigpen Ron McKernan? If Keith's on it, is Donna Godchaux? No Brent Mydland or Bruce Hornsby or Vince Welnick or Tom Constanten. What about Mickey Hart? Nope, John Barlow didn't help write this one. I think it was on Workingman's Dead? In any case, Jim Morrison is also on this CD. So is Gloria Estefan. and Grace Slick. and Jack Cassady and Marty Balin. Run Through The Jungle is a song by Credence Clearwater Revival. Revolution is a song from The Beatles and may have been written by John Lennon and/or Paul McCartney and/or Ringo Starr but I doubt that but possibly George Harrison. And one of these songs might be from Country Joe McDonald. That is all.
Rude Awakening

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

1989

Revolution - Mike + The Mechanics
Success - Sigue Sigue Sputnik
Rude Awakening - Bill Medley
Darling Be Home Soon - Phoebe Snow
We The People - Franke & The Knockouts
Comin' Home - Kim Carnes
Run Through The Jungle - The Georgia Satellites
Conga - Miami Sound Machine
Roadhouse Blues - The Doors
Somebody To Love - Jefferson Airplane
Uncle John's Band - Grateful Dead
Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - Bob Dylan

Kind of a weird selection of tunes here. They don't all go together but eh, it's not bad music. This is one of those 75 cent purchases that I got only because the Dead's on there. Not that I needed this CD to have that song... but I thought what the heck. This is also one of those albums that I'll listen to like once every two or three years and that's all that's needed. Worth the 75 cents? Eh.

Also on the trail...
and this concludes Bob Dylan's 1962 debut self-titled album...
In My Time Of Dyin'
Man Of Constant Sorrow
Highway 51
Baby, Let Me Follow You Down
Song To Woody
