Gettin' Jazzy With Chuck & Snoopy

Really wanted to hear this again before I deleted the files. It's not often after I listen to a rented album that I really wanna buy a copy but this one qualifies for that.

Wynton & Ellis Marsalis

Joe Cool's Blues (1995)

(click any song title to listen free... newly added feature for me, hope it works.)

Linus & Lucy [Radio Edit]
Buggy Ride
Peppermint Patty
On Peanuts Playground
Oh, Good Grief!
Wright Brothers Rag
Charlie Brown
Little Red-Haired Girl
Pebble Beach
Snoopy & Woodstock
Little Birdie
Why, Charlie Brown
Joe Cool's Blues (Snoopy's Return)

I love this album. Wynton and his dad dish up these cool tunes that are so relaxing and just marvelously written and played. Okay, it's not a perfect collection, I wasn't left completely exhilarated... but it's pretty sweet! Ideally this for me is great when I don't want to listen to anything especially loud and rockin', when I kinda wanna just kick back and chill. Would be a great listen on a long plane ride. And I just found a brand new, unopened copy for a buck 30 or perhaps I'll just go used for 75 cents (not including a couple bucks shipping.) Lookin' forward to owning this one!

Play Misty For Me

Back out for another run tonight. Evening is night, right? It's almost night. If the sun's still above the horizon, that's not night. As I'm out there it dips below the horizon, stars become visible, but the sky doesn't get completely black before I walk back in the door. Still there's a tint of blue and it's not fully dark yet. I suppose I'm out there from the latest part of the afternoon right through most of the evening, just about to night.

ANYWAY... my two minor problems felt better, good enough to feel safe from further injury. I probably woulda been safe yesterday but twas good to have the rest. Even with the rest I wanted to get back out there. Now that I'm back from this evening's run I feel GREAT... except the shin problem persists. Not happy about that.

About 70 minutes on the trail...

Kingfish with Bob Weir:

The Winners, Festival
Bobby solo acoustic:
Heaven Help The Fool

This Time Forever
Desolation Row°
Throwing Stones

° = First Time Played by Bobby. I'm not sure why but this is represents only slightly more than half the tunes with Bobby. These may have been broadcast on the Grateful Dead Hour and that could also explain why not all of it is in order... I put them in order here but on the recording they're slightly rearranged. One of these days I've gotta see if all the songs exist 'cause this is a cool little show. Fever is excellent, done in a reggae style so completely unlike later times played by Bob & Rob and Ratdog. Misty is pure Bobby Lounge Singer. Very interesting. Desolation Row was apparently a crowd selection. It had been in the Dead's repetoire for only about a month but he nailed it here; so sweet. All around some pretty neat tunes, groovy stuff, fantastic acoustic Weir, loved it all and almost 19½ minutes worth made for a great run.

Acoustic Dead Run

I could blabber on, blabber blabber blabber, but really all there is to say is my run this evening was just another great run!

A Moment Alone
When We First Met

Mill Valley Recreation Center
Mill Valley, California

Dire Wolf, On The Road Again, I've Been All Around This World,
Monkey & The Engineer, Jack-A-Roe, Cassidy, Bird Song,
Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie, Ripple

Holy cow! This little Dead show just might be an immensely overlooked gem that shined brighter than almost everything I've listened to for a good long time.

The venue in tiny Mill Valley was not an arena with seating upwards of or over 10,000. It wasn't a theater with seating for a thousand or two. Where this took place was probably just a large room and maybe even without a proper stage. The event may not even have been open to the public. More likely just a private Christmas party primarily for kids with Muscular Dystrophy. There were clowns and some dude named Santa Claus and of course a bunch of former acid-dropping hippies to provide some musical entertainment.

We're probably pretty lucky to have this recording. No soundboard exists but thanks to Betty Cantor-Jackson, we have this beautiful audience recording that she made of this rare "show."

A short acoustic set was all they played. Having just recently played a few dozen acoustic sets at the Warfield and Radio City Music Hall a month and a half earlier, this was sort of no big deal. But this was just a show for kids. No screaming crowd, no pot smoke wafting through the hall, no Otis... just entertaining for a bunch of brave children and perhaps some parents and other adults there that afternoon. We're even treated to one kid saying to Jerry that he wants to hear some rock n roll and someone walking around between songs giving out ice cream. I wondered, though, why didn't bust out a Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree or I Fought The Law or somethin'. Nothing like that, just a regular acoustic Dead set but for kids and how beautiful that was!

sweet runnin', cher

Back in running shoes! It's only been like, what, a week? Oi. When the run was done, I was soooo thankful; it wasn't easy but it felt great that I'd made, once again, over 12½ minutes!

around 95 minutes on the trail . . .

Running Time -- 12 minutes & 42 seconds (up 12 from last run)

some music for Mardi Gras & The Big Easy

Moon Over Bourbon Street -- Sting
Basin Street Blues -- Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Bourbon Street Parade -- Al Hirt
Canal Street Blues -- Louis Armstrong
Christmas In New Orleans -- Louis Armstrong
New Orleans Stomp -- Louis Armstrong
Blues For New Orleans -- Duke Ellington
Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans? -- Ellis Marsalis
New Orleans Bump -- Wynton Marsalis
Sweet Home New Orleans -- Dr. John
Mardi Gras In New Orleans -- Harry Connick, Jr.
Go To The Mardi Gras -- Art & Aaron Neville
Mardi Gras Boogie -- Clifton Chenier & His Red Hot Louisiana Band
Walkin' To New Orleans -- Buckwheat Zydeco
Talkin' Bout New Orleans -- The Meters
City Of New Orleans -- Arlo Guthrie
New Orleans Instrumental No. 1 -- R.E.M.

Great music. Just about feels like I'm back in my hotel room in the Quarter after a nice run through New Orleans. Okay, it doesn't really feel like that at all but it was a nice selection of music celebrating New Orleans & Mardi Gras. Of course Fat Tuesday was like 2 weeks ago but better late than never!

Almonds? Cashews? Peanuts!

I think I've forgotten what it feels like to wear my hiking boots! I've been so caught up in running that it feels like weeks since I've gone for a "hike." Of course, being on the trail for 93 minutes means I do a significant amount of hiking . . . but it's in my running shoes vs. lacing up my hiking boots for strictly a hike. Anyway, nice afternoon today. I didn't progress by my usual 20+ seconds 'cause I didn't have ready the playlist that I originally wanted to take. Still I went again a little bit longer, a little bit further. I'm in no rush.

time on the trail: about 93 minutes

running time -- 9 minutes, 47 seconds (+16 seconds this time)

listened to:

* from the album:
Marlo Thomas & Friends: Thanks & Giving All Year Long
(a benefit for the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital)

* Teeny Meany -- James Earl Jones & Marlo Thomas
* The Little Stuff -- Marlo Thomas
* (I'll Give) Anything But Up! -- Hilary Duff
* Unsung Heroes -- Wayne Brady

Body And Soul -- Billie Holiday
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas -- Frank Sinatra

Wynton Marsalis & Ellis Marsalis -- Joe Cool's Blues

Linus & Lucy
Buggy Ride
Peppermint Patty
On Peanuts Playground
Oh, Good Grief!
Wright Brothers Rag
Charlie Brown
Little Red-Haired Girl
Pebble Beach
Snoopy & Woodstock
Little Birdie
Why, Charlie Brown
Joe Cool's Blues (Snoopy's Return)
and finally
Russian Lullaby -- Jerry Garcia & David Grisman

With this outing I have reached my maximum limit (1) for Hilary Duff songs this decade. (It's actually not a bad song.) My run to Billie & Frank was nice and mellow followed by my first time ever hiking to jazz. Can't go wrong with Wynton Marsalis. Really good music. And once again Jerry to finish up.

I've got so many playlists for hiking ready, plus Dead shows. Maybe tomorrow . . . if I can break free from this temporary addiction for pushing my run times up.

one says one number and the other another
