in the big hard world

Introspection... but not a thesis, not while buzzed. This song -- Hard Sun by Eddie Vedder -- has got me captivated this morning.

Eddie Vedder - Into The Wild soundtrack (2007)I put the Into The Wild Soundtrack on and when I got to Hard Sun I set the music player to repeat and play just that one song -- over and over and over, for a half hour, for an hour, I just can't get tired of it. At some point I went to Youtube and checked out the video and...... geez, man, the similarities between me and that idiot Chris McCandless, they're there. I guess I always knew this but there's a new component now. We both had a rich east coast upbringing that went buh bye to search for the wild of the west -> eventually Alaska. That's where young McCandless was a schmuck and Alaska was too big for him. It's too big and too wild for many... he went Into The Wild... but was unable to come out of it. "Lonely. Scared." he wrote. I know those feelings but they are not ones you can have in the wilderness.

We both also wanted little to do with Society. Yet I find myself sitting here smack dab in the middle of Society, wanting to very much be a part of American Society even more. But things go good -> things go bad, and what I could say about McCandless -- "What a waste of a life" -- could now be said about me, as well. Another striking similarity. At least I'd be smart enough not to get myself dead with the Parks Highway just a day or two walk to the east.

P.S. Before I ever even knew about the movie being made, I went looking for that bus once. Because of wicked high volume of melting glacial waters, I was unable to make it but I could take you there tomorrow. McCandless wasn't that far away from civilization (a major Alaskan road) and that's he's kind of a joke and why his demise is somewhat laughable to many Alaskans.

One day is fine, next is black

Bourbon and a bagel for breakfast? Why the heck not. 58° and raining and I've gotta walk to the local convenience store for a Coke so's I can properly wash down this bourbon. Me not a straight drinker of the spirit, no way... tequila, sure, but not bourbon. Good breakfast -- couple shots with a Coke, actually not a Coke, that's sort of a lie, I bought an RC Cola. Good to start the day with bourbon. Nothing better at 7:45 a.m. i always say. Well, maybe not always but now. I always wonder what the cashier at the grocery store thinks when I'm buyin' a 6 of Newcastle or Sam Adams at 7:15 a.m. I coulda sarted with the beer but the bourbon first is perfect. oh yeah. and a bagel, of course. not really of course 'cause i don't eat bagels often but bein' from northern New Jersey, they're in my blood. Didn't quite get good NY bagels, or even northern NJ bagels... but okay. Besides, when you're drinkin, what the dang heck does it matter? all's i know is i've gotta stop diong this. bad news, man. then walkin' back from the cinvenince ctore (wow... without correcting i am typing wayyyyyy badly but who gives a crap.) anyway, where was i? almost got creamed by a truck. well, i could've if i wanted to. thought aabout it. I did want to but I'm not completely ready. Besides, what if the driver of the truck swerved and hit something or someone else and the injury wasn't just to me? That wouldn't be good. That's not the right way to die. The right way is let the physical just be you but maybe let another or others see it happen so they have to live with what they've done. That always sounds good to me. Almost revenge but I know revenge is wrong. I dunno. Anyway, twas a Cheerwine truck, i noticed. he was barrelin' down, doin' a whole maybe 40 in a 35, maybe 45 he was doin. coulda killed me, sure, had i been hit the right way. believe me, i thought about it. all's i coulda done was not crossed at the second i did and waited a few seconds. Emeril doing color commenatary mighta gone, "BAM!" Yeah, man. That'd a-been a waste of an RC Cola (and a small bag of Fritos.) $2.65 that coulda gone into my will (recipient not yet chosen, thought it was but now not sure... I've really gotta get that done 'cause who the hell knows what can happen... what will happen, what might... what will.... but when? Hard to say.)

Anyway, where was I? 2 minute walk back i thought of -- Should I Stay or Should I Go? Tough question to answer. Not much reason to stay, is there, Ame? Juliet doesn't think so either. I'd tell you both to go to hell but A) I can't because I'm not a mean, heartless bastard and B) maybe you're right. Too much hope to go but it sucks like the worst hell to stay.

Beer time, #2.

Gotta love an overcast rainy day. Practically black outside and it's 8-something a.m -- perfectly matches this feeling of despair. Tis weird 'cause it ain't all bad. Watched CSI: Miami earlier and it was a decent 44 minutes (On Demand, without commercials) of semi-relief. Dang thing is i don't wanna fill my life with TV. I didn't watch much that to begin with now I'm filling 44 minutes here, 60 minutes there with Monk and Psych and Trauma and CSI and NCIS and there's more I could try and might 'cause music only goes so far. Music? Music's good, too... but there are just do many frickin' hours in a day to fill.

This has gotta stop. Something's gotta give.

Everyone's a Captain Kirk on Electric Avenue

Sugarmag and I, over on her blog, did a meme last night called Unconscious Mutterings... it's a Word Association thing we try to do every Sunday and one of the words was...

Electric ::

Mucho classico!!! I remember that from way way back in the earliest days of MTV, yeah, back when they actually used to play videos!!!!

After seeing that vid on Youtube, I happened to see another classic...

Please, if you wish, have a look at the German version:

Here's a cool Updated Version from 2002...

Wanna see a live version from Nena? Click here.

I love German New Wave!! Well, at least this song.

Man, these are like two of the greatest songs ever!! Stoopid Youtube... I should be sleeping, instead I'm spending like an hour checking out old videos. Good stuff, though!

Kinda Grungy Run

Am I a fool to be surprised by this?

Sen. Roland Burris admitted in a document released Saturday that former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's brother asked him for campaign fundraising help before the governor appointed Burris to the Senate. The disclosure is at odds with Burris' testimony in January when an Illinois House impeachment committee specifically asked if he had ever spoken to Robert Blagojevich or other aides to the now-deposed governor about the Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama.
Honest to goodness, I thought this guy was clean. It turns out he's just another lying politician. He lied under oath, said he had never spoken to a representative for Blagojevich about money. Never means never, not ever, not once. But now he's saying that yes, he did speak to someone. I caught some of his press conference before I went for a run and the weasel just kept spinning, spinning, spinning, trying to turn it into a huge mistake by the press and by others, misunderstanding what he was referring to or some bogus baloney like that.

The question now is -- will Burris be forced to resign or will Congress sweep his lies under the rug? They have, after all, turned a blind eye to the tax cheating by the disastrous-so-far Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner. What's one more lying piece of crap in Washington? Join the crowd!!!

Sunday Afternoon Run: 24 minutes 43 sec

4:50 pm - 52
° - kinda chilly and overcast

Not a bad run despite the fact that I wasn't exactly sure that I wanted to run this afternoon. Feeling a little bit tired doesn't help me get my butt dressed and out the door and to the trail. But I did it, ya know, 'cause, well, like, ya see, it's important. For sure it is. Totally.

Anyway... 52 degrees Fahrenheit is right at that temp when I'm not sure about short or long sleeve. Short is chilly when I first go outside but long, I just know, woulda been too warm when I had finished with my almost 25 minutes of running. Fortunately, since I went with the short-sleeve, what I did was turn around about half way through my run so I didn't have that far to walk back. If it was warm or if I had more time and I'd worn a long-sleeve shirt, I'd run 25 minutes out and walk almost 45 minutes all the back... but not with only a short sleeve shirt on and no sun overhead.

The run itself felt good. I'm looking forward to 25 minutes -- almost there. I had no thoughts of quitting prematurely, no significant aches or pains, felt really damn good. I'm beat down tired now but had I'd gone more than 3 days without running (my only significant exercise) I'd begin to really get down on myself. I'm glad I got out there!

Only 2 more runs needed and I will eclipse my January Run Time. Sweet. But I'm shooting for 5 more runs in February, 5 more runs and 4 Total Hours!

Yeah, now this beats the hell out of the last album I listened to a few days ago by Ben Folds. This has guitar, it has edge, it's loud, it kicks ass, it makes me want to TURN THE VOLUME UP... not sit and politely nod and clap at what nice music it is. Seattle turned out a LOT of great music since the mid to late '80's and this band makin' it big in '93 is no exception! A couple of these songs I've known -- "You" and "Far Behind" -- but the rest is brand new to me. I'm not sure if there's a single song here that I don't dig. Love the lead guitar work throughout and the drums really help drive these songs. Kinda reminiscent of Pearl Jam at times but the lead singer's voice here is different from Eddie Vedder's, giving this its own distinctive sound.

Sunday Evening Nothingness

picture from the Sydney Morning Herald

Man. We have bad fires in the U.S., sometimes a life or two lost, rarely more and never loss of life like that which is occurring in Australia this past week. I've really gotta wonder how we prevent such death while there it's so horrible. Don't people see fire and leave? Don't officials go and tell people to leave before the fire line gets to them? No offense but are Americans smarter?!? And it's not like Australia is a third world country. I just don't get it.

Anyway...

#21 ranked Illinois beat higher ranked Purdue today.
Very cool... I guess?

Yes, I would like to run every 2 days, or every 2 or 3 days, but, well, I dunno, I just wasn't so much into this run. I got it done, though. That I'm happy about. I feel pretty good, I added a third of a minute -- not a lot but that's better than only 10 or 12 second, certainly better than no added time at all.

I'm not exactly sure what possessed me to listen to The Human League. That one song is okay, catchy and popular and all but... this is.... not exactly my favorite kind of music. Not even close. The thing is, for running it's just fine. Aside from using it while running and while on the trail, I've given a few listens to this and it's not bad... but I don't think I'll ever listen again and, in fact, I'm not truly gonna rule it out but I might skip this band altogether for the rest of this life and potentially the next one, too.

Double the Mutterings, Double the Fun

Sick all Saturday, slept all evening, now awake all night. My eyelids feel so heavy yet oddly I can't freakin' fall asleep. Just Shoot Me . . . no, I mean the TV series, it's on TV Land, a 4-hour marathon. Not the best show but Spade and George Segal are pretty good okay in it. When there's nothing else on and I don't feel like listening to music and my eyes are too blurry to read... it's perfect mindless pseudo-entertainment.

But now I guess I'll finish up what Sugarmag and I started earlier...

It a gonna burn ... The river roll roll roll

Sick, going through a whole box of tissues in a single afternoon, cold medicine NOT helping, tis a day to veg out and just let the world go by. Randomly flipping through ten million pounds of sludge on TV while avoiding the news channels so as to not drown in the ludicrously disgusting Obamamania or the boringness of little girls with a paltry skill level trying to play basketball, a sport that should be respected only at the highest level (teams who can score more than 50 or 60 points in a game,) I caught the following video on One-Hit Wonders, on VH1 Classic... haven't seen this since the mid-80's...

Beam Me Up, Susanna Hoffs!

I don't get how people can go outside into the bright sunlight without sunglasses on. Walking 50 feet to the mailbox in bright sunlight is too far for me... not too far to walk, too far to go in bright sunlight without sunglasses on. Sometimes I'd stand just inside the door to watch my dog wander around the front yard for awhile and I wouldn't even be outside and I'd need sunglasses. Are my eyes super-sensitive? Nope. (I used to be a vampire but after my reassignment surgery, I'm all better now.) I just don't wanna screw 'em up any more than they already are (For many, many years I was 20/20 but now I'm farsighted.) People should protect their eyes, it's important! I wanna keep my vision as good as it can be -- "The better to see your lovely lady parts with, my dear!"

Anyway, even though the weather outside was a wee bit frightful, my sunglasses I left in Louisville this past weekend. Not good. I've learned my lesson -- own more than one pair!!!

No sunglasses meant I had to wait to go for my run today. I wanted to go earlier in the day but the sun was a-shinin' right overhead with almost no clouds in the sky and running in bright sunlight without sunglasses would drive me nuts, that is if I even attempted such a stoopid thing. Since I waited for the sun to dip below the treeline on the way down below the horizon, I had not a single minute of eye discomfort. I did have heat discomfort: long-sleeve running shirt was fine to start but I was wayyyyy too warm in the end. That's a problem so minor and insignificant it's not really worth mentioning.

A bit tired and I'm a-fearin' I might be sick (very sore throat causing me to not want to eat which is Ka-raaaaaazzy) but still I had a decent run. Unfortunately I didn't add much time onto my last run time but that was mostly on purpose and I think I'm okay with it. It's been six days since my previous outing and so I didn't want to add that much on and the songs I was using worked out to a mere 4 seconds added. At least I didn't backtrack, ya know . . . I very easily could have just done 23 or 24 minutes and worked my way back up.

Oh, I'm so tired now (more than just a bit) but I think my bod feels good: no soreness and I feel like I want to run again tomorrow! I might not (probably won't) but the fact that I'm wanting to now, that's a great sign.

Cool.

I find it interesting that Susanna Hoffs doesn't take the vocals on all the songs here. I'm not sure she did on the wildly successful album A Different Light but I think she had the bulk of them. I'm not sure what the breakdown is here. Does it matter? No. I'm typing out of my ass. It doesn't matter who's singing but I do dig Susanna Hoffs on lead vocals. Another interesting thing (to me) is -- is this "alternative" or pop? College rock? I really don't know. Does it really matter? Again, not really. Really? Really.

Be Entertained

Sorry, kids, I think Inspiration Move Me Brightly is going on a tiny hiatus here from posting a show. Nothing on Thursday and Friday...

I had planned on putting up a show from '70 but I think I can fairly easily get the Jefferson Airplane set from the same night and include that in the same post. Would be cool, yah? Yah. Yah!! So I'll wait on that. I'm wicked busy this weekend -- no show Saturday or Sunday and maybe not Monday. Tuesday for sure! Have no fear, plenty of shows to post this year! Okily dokily then? Yah.

A much needed run! I was dreading this because I didn't have time for it, plain and simple. Running with way too many things to do is bad, bad I say. The whole time all I wanted to do was sprint to the finish line (my End Cue embedded in my mp3 player's Play List.) Wanting to run fast to finish faster was only like a million percent stoopid because if I was going to run for a set amount of time, running faster wouldn't get me done any faster! This I knew... but my mind kept taking me to a place of thinking: "Faster, Lots To Do, Faster, Lots To Do." Not good. But... I got it done. I finished my time, I felt okay physically, added some time and my running life is okay right now... except I am extremely unhappy with the fact that I won't be running for the next 5 whole days but eh, I'm gonna be busy, not like I really can, well, I could, I suppose, but would be tough to. Oh well. SO... that's why this run today was So Extremely Needed.

What's there to say about this album? This is about as classic rock as classic rock gets! Such great memories of hearing Zep on the radio -- WNEW -- back when I lived in northern New Jersey, back when WNEW was THE Best Radio Station In The World. And for some reason I associate this stuff with summer... summertime, radio on, cruisin' down to the Jersey Shore, for a good hour, hour and a half, WNEW would be picked up just fine before getting too far away from the city. Ahhhhhh traffic on the Garden State Parkway. With great music like this on the radio, what a joy that was! This will never get old, will it? Forty years ago this year Zep released their first two albums. I think I actually dig Zep II more than their debut. I wonder if anyone else feels the same. In any case, this Deadhead NEEDS more Zep!!

I ran. Not Tehran. I went running. That's what I mean. Hummus, please. No Hamas. No political statements made today. Our government hasn't much to be proud of but if I type about any of it, it'll just sadden me. What a great yet so screwed up country we have. Ay caramba. Good and bad. Three days since my last run -- not bad. Warm temperature -- bad. Feeling now that I've showered and am resting -- pretty darn good.

I'm terribly unhappy with the temperature here in South Carolina in early frickin' January. You've basically got to be kidding me. Wrong. Disgusting. Horrible. Sick. But before I get dramatic about it... what else can I do? Not run? That would mean, for me, no exercise. While I'd almost be happy never exercising and eating whatever I want, that ain't no way to live! Gotta exercise, gotta stay healthy!! So I'm not trying to let the high temperatures get to me. That means I can't necessarily add on that much time. I could've today, could've added a half minute and pushed myself on upward even closer to 30 minutes.... but nay 'cause I knew the warmth of the air would suck more energy out of me. Damn it. Damn it, damn it, damn it. Ahh well. Whatever. I got my run in, I added a little time on, and so that's good.

More weight to lose, though. More weight to lose.

I've always wanted to get more Church in my life and awhile back I finally got their debut album. Great place to start, as always. Twas a few moons ago (circa 1990) when I had their internationally popular album Starfish, the one with the hit song that propelled them worldwide: "Under The Milky Way." This album had their first radio hit: "The Unguarded Moment" (video below.) This is very cool stuff, for the most part. Maybe a song or two that's not as good as the rest but over all, Steve Kilbey so confidently leads his band from Canberra. Canberra? I didn't know that until today. Whenever I think of a band being from Australia, I think, naturally: Sydney. I know my geography quite well and I know there's more to Oz than Sydney but it seems, regardless of where they're from in Australia, nearly everyone gravitates to Sydney much like in America how bands from all over make their move to New York City because they know they have a much better chance of making it big. Anyway... this is a nice mix of mellow and more rockin' tunes, definitely a glimpse of what's to come from these guys. I'm definitely looking forward to more Church in the future. Amen!

I wonder if Alison listened to Jerry

Ready for another 100 Days of the Grateful Dead?

Yeah right. It's actually been very relaxing to not worry about posting a show the past four days. Hey, but have no fear, there'll be more Weir! As you're putting together your furniture from Ikea, there'll be a lot more Garcia. More Mickey, more Billy; more Brent, Vince and Brooooooce. "We want Phil! We want Phil! We want Phil!" It's all gonna keep on coming down the pike so sit tight, don't fight, go out lookin' for your kite!

I've got a never-ending supply of shows to keep on listening to and posting. It won't happen on a scale of 50 to 75 shows posted in the next 100 days, but Sugarmag and I will do what we can. I've got a few juicy nuggets for this week and lots of ideas and unless I'm hit by a bus, shows'll keep on getting posted 'round here for all to dig. Good tunes should be shared with good, friendly people so leave comments and feel free to make any requests for something in particular you might be looking for. We can't read your minds if you remain ungratefully silent! If you do remain silent, maybe we'll one day think you collectively just don't care enough and Inspiration, Move Me Brightly'll just be deleted and all these shows will go Buh Bye. Don't want that to happen, eh? Me neither! So help keep it going! Feed the beast, the beast won't bite, and in return you might get every last note to feed that jones for these good ol' tunes.

"Let there be songs, to fill the air."

Happy New Year, kids!

Jammin' Mutterings for Sweetness

Once again it's Sunday and you know what that means, kids? It's time to play everybody's favorite fun time game, Take A Step Back. Now when I count to three, take a step back. Ready? And a one, and a two, and a three, Take A Step Back. A one, a two, a three, Take A Step Back.

Oh wait, what I meant to say is it's time for Mutterings...

R.I.P.

Movies touch us, they inform us, they get us excited, they help us laugh, they take us away, they allow us to forget. Caring so much about the lives of celebrities is quite lame... but I think it's okay to recognize those who've helped bring a little sunshine in our lives...

Ya know, I don't think I realized that Jerry Reed passed away in 2008. Smokey and the Bandit, once upon a time, was without a doubt, one of my all-time favorite movies. It's still a fun watch and this is such a cool song from the movie... check it out!

Running with an Eagle

I'm just not in the mood to rant about nothin' right now. Protesters are protesting Israel defending themselves in London, England ... there were no protests about Hamas shooting missiles at Israel EVERY SINGLE DAY but when Israel defends itself against that, ohhh, that's bad? Morons. What should Israel do? Bend over and keep on taking it? It's okay for Hamas to use violence against Israel but it's NOT okay for Israel to defend themselves? Hmmm. Yeah, that makes sense... but nope, I'm not gonna rant about that.

I should just post this and sit my butt down to watch the last couple hours of the Married With Children marathon on Spike. Now that's good television! Al Bundy rules!! Seriously, there aren't many sitcoms better than Married With Children.

Anyway...

As 100 Days of the Dead comes to a close, this being Day 98, sorry but no tunes today. Check back tomorrow and the next day 'cause there'll be two more shows to close out the year (including a New Year's Eve show from nineteen hundred and something)...

...and then 2009'll be here. Show posting will slow down in January but there'll still be an effort to get good stuff up on a semi-regular basis -- maybe 3 or 4 shows a week, maybe sometimes only 1 a week. I'll do what I can to keep on spreading the tunes.

The North Face trail running shoe -- good for use in the Appalachian Mountains ... but seriously, they are rather small compared to the Rocky Mountains ... Sierra Nevada are sweet, too. Would definitely use 'em in the Alps, that's for sure. One thing's for sure -- Jerry Garcia or Bob Weir or Phil Lesh or Blaise Compaoré probably never went running in Liberia, Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, Pyongyang, Probably the same with Brent Mydland. At least that's my gut feeling. I could be wrong. I mean, there were a lot of drugs at Grateful Dead shows and the good Lord above, He knows I did my share!

A great run this afternoon. I was worried about rain but it held off. The trail was wet but oh well, this exercise was mucho needed. Five days without running is too long for me. I've got to put forth a better effort to get out there every 2 to 4 days but none of this 5 crap.

The temperature is a little too warm for my liking, ESPECIALLY in late December, but there's no sense in complaining about it. I was still able to add some time onto my run from last Wednesday so that's cool. Slowly but surely I'm workin' my way on back up to a half hour. Marathon, here I come!!! (HAAA!)

Best thing about today's run is I eclipsed my Total Time for last month. I'm close to a whole run ahead of November so that's sweet. One more run in the last two days of this month and I'll be back up over 3 hours for the month. Paltry to some, not bad for me. I could spend those hours sitting on my ass getting fat and developing diabetes... but ya know, I'd rather not, thanks.

So I run!

I'm not sure how I feel about this debut album from Glenn Frey. In the past, because of his appearance on Miami Vice, I've totally dug a couple songs from this Detroit native and member of The Eagles, but I've never heard an album of his and... I don't know, this is so... Soft Rock. There's one or two songs that sound like The Eagles, and another that's okay (Don't Give Up) but... well... it's Soft Rock. Eh. Okay but nothing special.
