Felt the Pain, Heard the Payne

Music! It needs to get posted. Not an album like in this running post but Dead tunes, eh? Yahhh? I've been meanin' to get a show up and then another and then another... but life gets in the way sometimes, ye know what I be jivin' about? Well, do ye? Not that I keep a schedule but I'm behind on my schedule... if there was a schedule that I've been keepin'. Oh well. I know some of ye all come 'round everyday lookin' for something new and to those who comment sometimes -- no worries, more shows are always comin' up soon. Hopefully never more than a few days between downloads. And to those who never leave a single comment..... WHY NOT?! WHY DO YOU DOWNLOAD AND NEVER EVEN SAY A SINGLE WORD OF THANKS?!?!?! Ay caramba.

Anyhow, I'm way behind and as of this morning wayer behind because now I've got my hands on some recent Soundboards that some people might be wantin' to hear. Yahhh? Well, I shall pick things up hopefully this afternoon with a new show posted, I'll start listening to those soundboards and get those ready for a post or two, and in between it all, some good old Grateful Dead and a Garcia item here and there. For today, maybe something later, we'll see....

I went for a run and I'm incredibly tired.

One thing's for sure -- Jerry Garcia or Bob Weir or Phil Lesh or Blaise Compaoré probably never went running in Liberia, Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, Pyongyang, 3 Days Since My Last Run

11:40 a.m. - 66° - cloudless, breezy, gorgeous!

So tired. Such a beautiful morning but I just wasn't prepared for a run. Still I accomplished what I set out to do so I suppose that's good. But now I'm feeling it and I don't like it. Perhaps 10 minutes would have been fine but halfway through, all I wanted to do was not just stop but collapse and go to sleep right on the trail. Bad, bad, bad. Running is SO very important, though. It's my only significant exercise. Without this exercise, I'd just get fat and disgusting. Not good. I already feel like 24 minutes barely does a thing for me. In my quest to work my way up past 25 and up to 30 minutes, I did add on another half minute but still I feel like this isn't good enough. I'm at 1/10th of a marathon (should I be able to finish one in about 4 hours.) One tenth = bad. Well, better than no running at all.

Wow, holy moly, what a fantastic album! Here is another 19 year old and I'm not complainin' about an American accent this time because this young woman is an incredible singer! Man, this was ten years ago? At 19 she sounds so mature and so accomplished. At times she rocks and her ballads aren't sappy, they're near perfection. This is one of those Christian albums in the category of being very ambiguous in the messages presented in the songs. There's one that's a conversation with God but aside from that there's not a minute of blatant preachiness or praise. This is the exact type of music that the secular listener could enjoy without really having to be subjected to God this, Father that... not that that's a bad thing but too much can, according to my musical tastes, make songs to syrupy and, well, lame. Just go to church for that. These tunes, while they sure can be one's music church for an hour outside of church on Sunday, they don't push the Savior down your throat in every other line. Again, secular listeners can surely dig this. It's another outstanding album and I do love the female voice that comes through loud and beautifully clear; Kendall Payne is amazing! Running with Fay

Coffee sucks. When a 20 ounce mug is the minimum intake each and every day -- and 40 ounces is often the norm -- skipping out on coffee means HEADACHE And that's how coffee sucks.

I don't know how it happened today, I just didn't make any. As the hours went on, a headache came on. Oh joy. I felt it in the bridge of my nose and the back of my head. The pain wasn't terrible but quite annoying. Ibuprofen didn't help. Finally around 3 o'clock I made coffee. Way too late in a hot day for coffee but the caffeine, or absence of, was what caused the headache in the first place... so it would make sense that caffeine intake would help wipe out the headache? Eh. It kind of worked but not really. What didn't help was driving back and forth to the hospital three times to check on my dad who was admitted yesterday for a kidney infection.

He finally got discharged late this afternoon, I finally had my coffee, and after 3 days I finally got a run in.

The headache remains. If I had it my way... I'd probably just cut my head off and be done with it... best way to get rid of a headache, I'm tellin' ya.

Having a headache almost prevented me from running... but, unless there truly are circumstances to keep me from running,
going 3 days without a run is UNacceptable.

My headache had seemed to subside enough to allow me to run and there being wind but no rain from the tropical storm, that helped, as well.

I'm not sure what I was thinking in thinking I could run 19 minutes straight through with my head feeling like it was. My Running Time was pre-planned for not-so-hot weather but also for not having a headache.

After two songs I quit and walked back to my Gatorade. A short rest later and I was hiking down the trail for awhile. I rolled back the Playlist so I could run for the two more songs that I had planned. Done deal.

Once my running was accomplished, the hike home had quite a bit of rain. A rain band from Tropical Storm Fay moved in and I just got soaked. Thankfully I had the foresight to put my mp3 player in a small zip-lock bag to make sure it wouldn't get waterlogged (in case it started raining) otherwise right now I'd quite possibly not have a working mp3 player.

Overall, I'm doin' pretty good with running and could (and should) soon be up and over 20 minutes again. For really hot and sunny weather my running times would be different (shorter and that's okay) but I'm doin' pretty good for temps in the low 80's.

A few years ago I was spending a lot of time listening to some Christian radio and Casting Crowns was just emerging on the national scene at the time with this album.

From McDonough, Georgia (outside of Atlanta) by way of Daytona Beach, Florida, Casting Crowns offer up a great collection of praise and worship that is just screaming to played at high volumes ONLY. Anything less seems like it would be an insult to the loudness contained within these tunes. Plenty of guitar and loud singing drives these tunes and that need to be played loud, plain and simple.

Before the first two tracks (which are both just freakin' incredible!) each spent numerous weeks on top of the Christian music chart, a couple of mildly unflattering reviews were written for Lifesong on Christianmusictoday.com and Jesus freak Hideout. For shame. For shaaaaame. Well, hey, those are just two writers and their opinions (and they just happen to be missing the greatness in this album. Too bad.) While sometimes not so deep, the writing's often great and the music is just excellent. Formulaic? Dime-a-dozen? In the same mold of others before them? Yeah -- may be. But when it comes to Christian music, even if they're similar to others: the more bands the better. The lack of tremendous variety needs to made up for and bands like Casting Crowns help fill that void.

No Gold For Me, Just a Beautiful Letdown

I ain't got nothin' to say. Maybe it's laziness. I dunno.
At least it's not a hundred freakin' degrees today.

2008 Beijing Summer Games Olympic Rings22 Medals for the U.S.
(currently)

20 for China. MUST BEAT CHINA.

I actually don't really care that much for these Olympics, though. Handball? Do we even play that in the United States?!? Water polo? Canoeing? BMX?!?!? Badminton?? Whatever.

I'd much rather be watching Mogul Skiing, Downhill, Snowboarding, Hockey... not synchronized freakin' diving. Like gag me with a spoon.

All I know we oughta beat China! I also know it's still not right for that damn Communist nation to be hosting something that should be respected... it's very difficult to respect this event (the Summer Games as a whole) in a place where human rights don't really mean a thing. Just sad.

If anyone is checking this blog for a newly posted Grateful Dead show or something from Garcia or anything else within the immediate GD Family -- you're still out of luck. Sorry.

Every single day I keep meaning to...
so very, very soon. I hope.

There's been quite a drought lately but I've not given up.
Easily I could just post up links like so:

...but that ain't my style, yo.

(By the way, please don't comment on that here... not that I really expect anyone to... that's actually supposed to go with my next GD (Garcia) posting so wait on commenting, would ya? Thanks!)

That posting should happen soon. We'll see. I'd really like to get back to putting shows up regularly... so if you (yes, you, you who is reading this) have been checking now and then for something new, keep checkin' back 'cause this Dead blog ain't dead yet!

I've been VERY upset with myself for going (almost) 5 days between runs.
Bad.
Five days with no significant exercise is just plain pathetic.

Finally this afternoon I ran.

With the relatively low temperature I was able to add a significant amount of time to what I'd been running (when it hasn't been 100 degrees.)

Part 1 -- 14 minutes 34 seconds. Long. My cardiovascular system was feeling it. A continuous run so short is for me a run that's actually kind of long at the moment. I think it's been awhile since I've run for almost 15 minutes straight; it's something I've got to get used to again. Because of the temp, I made it okay and could have actually run even longer.

Intermission: no sitting in the shade sipping my Gatorade to cool down. Yeah, I had some Gatorade but I kept walking the whole time. Felt pretty good.

Part Two -- Just a short, 1-song 3:51 add-on to extend My Total Time.
No problem.

I'm still unhappy that I went 5 days without a run... but with my time today I'm feelin' good... just hope I can keep it up.

Christian music
that's not Christian music -- that's exactly what Switchfoot achieves on their fourth album, The Beautiful Letdown.

This is not preachy music.
There's no declaration of faith.
There's not a single direct reference to God or Christ.

It's not really Christian music... but the band members are all Christians who live a Christian life. So in the lyrics here,
there's a message in every song but what they do is question much in this world, stimulating people to think. They also steer clear of subjects that would contain anything offensive to even the thumpiest of Bible thumpers.

Basically this is some great freakin' music, one o' the best albums I've heard all year, Christian or otherwise! Meant To Live (YouTube video link) got tons of radio play and it probably gets played quite often still to this day. It's a great, powerful, driving song with plenty of guitar and just a loud feel to the end. That sound permeates throughout the album, with some mellower sounds
interspersed here and there but never anything that would even remotely put the casual listener to sleep.

The songs here may not appeal to those wanting to hear light and fluffy God Is Great praise and worship and that is reflected in the fact that The Beautiful Letdown made it all the way to #16 on the Billboard music chart in 2004. At the same time Christians by the millions gobbled this album up, pushing it to the top of the Christian chart. Not bad on both spectrums.

Well, in less than 24 hours since my last post, the Mets won 2 games -- a night game last night and a day game today -- against the despised Phillies.

The whole first half of the season was just a pathetic drag... but now it's getting exciting. Finally. Baseball's hardly important to me but ya know, some people dig their American Idol, some people dig their Grey's Anatomy or Lost or what-have-you... maybe a little Jerry Springer?! Aside from great music and some good books, I dig a little baseball. And when your team's in 1st Place, hey, that's pretty sweet!!

Warm. Been worse but still way warm. Okay -- hot. I was probably too tired for a run under the bright sun but I felt determined. Even if I couldn't finish the whole Pre-planned Run Time without stopping, I was determined to get it done with a walking break in the middle, if needed. If needed I was determined to get it done with a walking break and sitting down for 5 or 10 minutes with some ice-cold Gatorade -- and that's what I needed. Not easy because of the heat but at the same time, I finished up pretty much just fine. My right calf feels a little strained but eh, not too bad. With a day off, or two, I'll be good to go again.

Like a week or so ago, I had sort of set a goal for the next 30 days, I think. Now, whatever that goal was, I'm not so sure about it. This summertime heat of South Carolina is really kickin' my butt. But I'll keep tryin' to run every few days, keep tryin' to improve and get used to 90+ degrees. It's important to me that I not give up and keep pushing on with running. I wanna get to a place of even better health, to burn away excess fat, have better fitting clothes... and build better stamina!!!

Onward!

The more music I listen to, the more music I realize I've never ever Pressed Play on before! The same is true (yet again) here with Third Day. Once upon a time I spent some time listening to a Christian music radio station and I have heard a few songs from this band, but never a whole album before now.

Coming from Marietta, Georgia (outside of Atlanta,) this band has some great songs here. The southern influence seems to run through it but not overly so. Also not overly present is the calling on God or Jesus directly. I didn't read along with the lyrics (I almost never do with any music) but I know God is here all over the place. In this way of writing, though, the person who has nothing to do with Christianity in any form whatsoever could listen to this music and never once think this is Christian music. That seems to appeal more and more to me and part o' the reason why is it has more room to rock and to be different... not that praising God in every song is a bad thing... that just gets a little old after awhile so it's nice to have something in my ears that goes against the grain!

I was able to Endure, now i'm Damaged... am i Crazy?!

I've got nothin'. Or do I? It often seems like I have nothing of importance to say but when I get going, something comes out...

I'm beat.

And I'm down because I pay a lot of attention to the news. STILL, in the midst of the cyclone aftermath in Burma/Myanmar, the "government" there is
showing less than very serious concern for victims. People are starving. People need medical care. No urgent need, thinks the leaders of that nation.

And then, my God, the earthquake in Communist China. If any consolation can be had it's from the fact that everything possible is probably being done for the victims of that tragedy. I hate to commend the Chinese government, who strips their citizens of what should be basic human rights, but they're working their butts off and truly mobilizing in huge and quick ways to help. Maybe, hopefully, someday they'll realize they need to have stricter building codes in earthquake-prone regions and then less people will die. Unless a 7.9 hits New York City, so many people would not die in the United States in such an earthquake. In the eyes of so many, we're such a horrible country... yet at the same time so advanced while the rest of the world lags behind and lets their citizens die in massive numbers.

It's just all so damn sad. I hate to post about such horror in the world... but it's important. And since I don't go about my life spreading that haze of sadness post in and post out and everywhere I go and to everyone I come in contact with, a little now and then does emerge from these fingers. Helps to get it out of me.

Had been a decent day until I changed the channel from ESPN (to real news) and until I started to read some news sites. No work today so I got errands done, laundry done, and then I killed myself with a run. Literally. I'm dead with no Dead pun intended. Dead i.e. deceased. I'm now a ghost.

Well... that's what it feels like. No, it just feels like I'm dead, totally wiped out dead. Time to recover.

A wicked hard time with running today. Holy friggin' couch potato, Doogie Howser. I feel like quitting. Forever... and just sitting on the couch to watch TV from now until I'm 420 pounds.

Running indoors ROCKS. Why? No bear tracks and No chance of being attacked by a bear. Let's add onto that hell the fact that I ran through 20 minutes of thinking: "Just quit, stop, turn around, quit, you don't need to do this, quit, this is stoooopid, your legs HURT LIKE CRAP, quit, now, quit... etc." Yeah, that was fun. Music? What music? All I heard was that bull in my head while on and off I attacked it with a volley of: "STOP WITH THOSE THOUGHTS -- RUN -- YOU... CAN ...FINISH... THIS!!!"

Worst run all year... I think. Definitely my worst run in recent memory. Reason: the surface of the trail is different from the indoor track I've been so
used to. Yesterday my run completely kicked my ass but I didn't fully know it until today... my quads were aching like a motherf.... but I wanted to push myself, I wanted to git 'er donnnne... I don't know why... I'm not trying to impress anyone... I just don't know... I guess because I'm not one to take it easy anymore... like I said, I wanna push myself. I did.

Twenty minutes down the trail and the walk back felt like 2 days long. When I got in my front door and into the shower I sat down and stayed there for over 20 minutes... I didn't wanna get out... but the darn water turned cold so it was either get out or get hypothermia... I chose the first one.

Now... I rest... and have a brief love affair with Advil.

I really dig this stuff. Tiffany Arbuckle Lee has a great voice and every song here has a cool "alternative" sound to it that I like. And while this is "Christian" music, there might not be a single utterance of the name God or Christ anywhere within the lyrics here. What that means is this doesn't cater to those who want in your face praise and worship while it does have mass appeal to those who want praise and worship without being so churchy preachy. I'm sure a lot of people listening to this might never make the connection.

Anyway -- here's some reading and reviews and some videos for Plumb from Jesus freak Hideout and Christianity Today.

This world works so beautifully, doesn't it?

WEEKEND, BABY! Yeah, that actually doesn't mean much to me. I don't have to work again until Sunday night so I do have (most of) the weekend off... but that's not always the case. Working a Saturday or a Sunday is a usual occurrence for someone who serves the community.

Anyway, let's see here... anything of substance this morning?

Burma/Myanmar sucks. Their IDIOT government wants foreign aid in the wake of the cyclone that struck there a week ago. But right now aid workers are sitting on their asses twiddling their thumbs in neighboring countries while visas are continually being denied or taking for-freaking-ever to be issued. Meanwhile -- people suffer. Meanwhile meanwhile -- much of the world doesn't care. I dunno for sure, that's just a cynical guess. All people can do, basically, is give a few dollars but I wonder how much of that is going on. As it appears at the moment, supplies are hardly getting to those who need them anyway. The brutal, murderous junta (military dictatorship) "running" that country is the biggest example of schmuck-face dooshbagery in this world right now. They almost make Ahmadinejerk and Kim Jong Mentally Il look sane. They certainly make the Bush regime look like a bunch of haloed Easter bunny genius angels in Santa Claus suits with bells on. Hurricane Katrina and the response to that was a spilled glass of water compared to the cyclone and aftermath in Burma.

The events there have turned from tragic to... I'm literally shaking my head at how insane this all is. In many affected parts of the nation, there's NO sign of any aid at all. Corpses, decomposing, lie about here and there with no one to pick them up. Not a few, not a hundred... thousands of them.

WHY DOES THE WORLD ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN?!? The world, collectively, goes about their business and allows a "government" like the one in Myanmar to do whatever they want... and now TENS OF THOUSANDS are dead, MILLIONS are suffering, homeless and without food and water. Military dictatorships who treat their people worse than dirt need to be forcibly removed from power. Sanctions against these nations just prolongs suffering and things do not change.

God, I envy (sometimes) the Americans who go about their lives not giving a crap about the rest of the world outside of their immediate line of sight.

I just can't be that person.

Would definitely use 'em in the Alps, that's for sure. One thing's for sure -- Jerry Garcia or Bob Weir or Phil Lesh or Blaise Compaoré probably never went running in Colombia, Paraguay, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, Pyongyang, Probably the same with Brent Mydland. At least that's my gut feeling. I could be wrong. I mean, there were a lot of drugs at Grateful Dead shows and the good Lord above, He knows I did my share!still muddy trail but getting close to
being runable... for now still indoors.

Couple hours ago, after my shift was over at 9 a.m. this morning, before I came home, turned on the news and got mad and sad, determined to keep up my current running frequency, I headed straight to the gym to the get my needed exercise in.

5th run in 9 days. Nice. Another good 20 minutes. I've been having no ill effects from this increased amount of running and these days these runs go pretty smoothly. After that misfortunate leg fracture last spring, I've certainly recovered and am doing well on my way to longer and longer running times... of course that's taking forever, it seems, but slow and steady wins the race... not that I'm running a race but what I'm a sayin' here is slow and steady is helping to better assure myself that I'm not pushing it too much, possibly dangerously so. Last thing I want is to be sidelined.

This is a fairly kickin' album. I had a feeling it would be. At the moment I don't listen to Christian radio but occasionally I check a Weekly Top 20 List and Fee, with the song "We Shine" (I think) was on their for awhile... maybe even reached #1? Just checked again and they have a song at #5. Popular new band, they are. Very cool.

Their debut from last September has really put them in a national spotlight. Lotta loud songs here with a nice amount of guitar to give a good edgy sound at times... especially with the Number 1 single here -- "We Shine". Holy cow, the video below shows them (loudly!) playing this song in church. How cool is that?! Other songs on the album aren't as fast and as "alternative" sounding as We Shine but overall it's a good mix that doesn't get too fluffy. Lyrics stay right down the middle, not overly preachy but at times they are raising up Christ directly by name rather than wandering into ambiguous territory. Some Christian music reviewers will not exactly applaud Fee calling them unmemorable and cookie cutter but they are what Christian music needs in order to give fans a wider array of artists to listen to.

Just a Friday Nite Run with RSJ

Crickey! All day we hovered, yes, hovered just above freezing, yes, that cold, just above freezing. Brrrr!!!! What happened to the beautifully springtime temps we had for a little while there? WHERE'D THEY GO?!?!??! I dunno... but they're gone for now.

One interesting thing as we leave mid-April and head towards May -- even at 10:40 p.m. there's still light in the sky. Darkness will be here soon but the days are REALLY long again. I hadn't even really noticed until after work tonight. Straight from work I had gone to the Rec Center for a run, and after I finished, I walked back out to my truck and turned on the ignition to pollute the atmosphere and when I went to turn my headlights on, I looked out the windshield and thought that I could drive home without them. That was around an hour ago. Headlights so not needed because there's enough light to see the road clearly enough without 'em. Kinda cool! Why hadn't I even noticed this lately? Beats me.

Now it's Friday night and if I can wrap this post up before 11-11:15, I've gotta decide on whether or not to head back out for a Guinness or two. Hmmm.... beer is never needed... but I worked 12 hours, I got a run in.... would be nice to see who's at the bar, kick back and down a few, maybe play some pool..... hmmm....

4 days since my last run!? Something's not right with me this month. I don't think I've put a string of two days together with a run. What the heck's up with that? Oh well. At least I am getting some runs in.

Not the easiest time tonight. Not sure why but a good guess might be because my runs aren't occurring slightly more often. Minor burning in the quads, minor aching/suffering of the the lungs and cardiovascular system. Still I was able to make it around the track enough times to reach my desired running time for tonight.

Slowly working my way towards 20 minutes... but I'm not so sure I can reach my goal for April -- BAD CHRIS! Shoot. Will make me feel like I failed... but I'll have to see what I can do about mentally erasing that thought and setting a goal for May.

Love this album from RSJ. There are no really fast-paced songs on here but at the same time almost nothing that qualifies as a ballad either. Not that ballads are bad but too many of them can make an album, especially a Christian album, too fluffy. Last thing I wanna be hearing is a Christian album that's too soft... not that too soft is bad music... just not for me. This is closer to louder and faster with nearly an "alternative" sound at times. God is always first and foremost in all her songs; no ambiguous lyrics here like the writing of some other Christian artists. But while Ms. St. James puts a message about God right out there, it doesn't feel too over-the-top preachy. Wow, an ideal mixture? Maybe. Good stuff!!
