Grateful Dead -- November 17, 1973
Pauley Pavilion
University of California, Los Angeles

1st Set: Me & My Uncle, Here Comes Sunshine, Looks Like Rain, Deal,
Mexicali Blues, Tennessee Jed, The Race Is On, China-> Rider,
Big River, Brown-Eyed Women, Around And Around

2nd Set: Row Jimmy, Jack Straw, Ramble On Rose,
Playing In The Band-> Uncle John's Band-> Morning Dew->
Uncle John's Band-> Playing In The Band, Stella Blue,
El Paso, Eyes of The World-> Sugar Magnolia

Encore: Casey Jones

I think this is the second-to-last (or something like that) Uncle as the show opener. Seems like odd placement before Here Comes Sunshine, which is beautiful by the way, as is the LLR that follows. There's just nothing wrong with this show. And when there's nothing wrong with a show, when a show's essentially perfect, I often find myself at a loss for words. These guys can say a few things about this show better than I can...

Although I am already guilty of contributing to the overemphasis on 1973, I cannot let this show pass without comment. I know of four concerts where The Dead played Playin> Uncle John's Band> Morning Dew> Uncle John's Band> Playin: one long seamless jam designed in heaven. This one is fantastic. Not only is each song perfectly played, but their relation is unparalleled. The transition from Morning Dew back into Uncle John's Band is so beautiful that it brought tears to my eyes on my drive back home this evening. Heavy analytical attempts could only fall short. If you don't have it, get it.

The other version of this combination I have is the 11-10-73 Winterland show. Although this rendition is slightly shorter and the transitions are not quite as smooth, the jams are great with different strengths and the result is equally impressive.

by DENNIS DONLEY

Although poor in sonic quality, set 1 of this epic show is high in musical quantity and quality. Jerry's playing throughout the evening is stellar; the extended segue from "China Cat Sunflower" into "I Know You Rider" is especially indicative of an "on" night with many embellishments by Garcia propelling it along. "Here Comes Sunshine" is very similar to the big beefy version in Tampa a month later, now enshrined by Latvala on Dick's Picks 1. Although a twelve-song first set seems generous by latter day standards, it was not unusual for this period; it is well paced and played with enthusiasm. First sets of this period also offer the listener some unusual song placements: a midset "Deal," for instance. However, it is what follows after the break that is truly stunning; set 2 features improvisational ensemble playing at its finest and really defines why I was on the bus for almost thirty years. This is a must-have second set!! The "Playing in the Band" > "Uncle John's Band" > "Morning Dew" > "Uncle John's Band reprise" > "Playing in the Band" reprise sequence is one of only three played (11-10-73 and 3/23/74 are the other two) and is absolutely flawless in its execution, with the songs flowing one into another almost effortlessly. This "Playing" palindrome, in comparison to those at Winterland and the Cow Palace, runs ten minutes longer than the former and almost seven minutes longer than the latter; the segues from song to song seem to be smoothest in this version. The harmonies at UCLA also seem to be much sharper than the others, although that could be as much a comment on the crispness of the tape as on the actual performances--this low-gen soundboard especially accentuates Keith's very nice punctuation throughout the set. In addition, the drop from "Uncle John's Band" into "Morning Dew" leaves one breathless. Even with verse flubs in "Dew," Jerry never skips a beat, slowly building to an expected climax that instead drops right back into "Uncle John's Band." This sequence seems to have had its origin in the Northwestern show a few weeks prior; however, in that show "Morning Dew" opens the second set, then proceeds to "Playing in the Band" > "Uncle John's Band" > "Playing" reprise, an arrangement that, although interesting, pales in comparison to this.

And, as if that wasn't enough, after tasty excursions through "Stella Blue" and "El Paso," we get the set-closing "Eyes" > "Sugar Magnolia"! Though I was in my infancy as far as shows go, I realized at the time I had witnessed something special.
