Encore: U.S. Blues

Sometimes a show hasn't much reason to be criticized. Sometimes there's just not much reason to keep saying over and over, things like -- This was great, That was great, Jerry smokes here, Listen for Phil wail there, etc. Sometimes a show is pretty darn nice from first note to last and the only to say is -- dude... just dig it (or something like that.)

In the Dicks Pick's series of official GD CD releases, 1980 had no shows released. There is a 2-CD compilation from Nassau in May '80 (Go To Nassau.) There was also a 2-show release in the Download Series (9-3 & 9-4) but those shows weren't available to anyone who wanted an actual CD copy. And of course there's Reckoning and Dead Set... but sadly, the 1980's has been largely ignored.

That's too bad because there are shows like this one -- Lakeland is basically Dick's Picks quality in both sound and (almost in) performance. This is pretty nice. I'd say Stranger and Let It Grow are my favorites here. Drums-> Space doesn't make much of an impression on me. In no time at all we're pushin' through NFA. It does feature some nice Jerry licks and Phil thumpage but it's just too pitifully short. Finally in Sunshine Daydream, the steam really gets picked up for the first time since Let It Grow. Man, Bob & Phil are just on overdrive! And Jerry, wow, he explodes into life at the very end of U.S. Blues! Fan-freakin'-tastic!

Okay, it's not the smokinest show from '80 but it's a good listen, it's got some very cool moments so check it out!

An In-Depth Guide To The
Music of
the Grateful Dead on Tape, 1975-1985

This lovely little 1980 show displays the instrumental talents of the band in set 1. Rooster is a pre-political-correctness version. I've always preferred the "I'm a little red rooster." This is, after all, a song about sex. Coyness has a place but not in this song. "Looks Like Rain" is very strong. It is a particular favorite of mine that translates well from the Dead's scoring to my guitar and fingers. This reading is very nicely done, a highlight from this show. "Deal" should have been on "Dead Set." It has the power and life that the "Dead Set" version only hints at. The band forgets about safety and how it might sound on vinyl in order to let the music drive the arrangement.

Set 2 is slightly disconnected, with moments of great power and virtuosity. "Stranger" opens strongly. Raucous as always, it ends with no place to continue; it's hard to jam into other songs so they don't try. This has always been a better first-set opener in my opinion. Then an exquisite "To Lay Me Down" makes you feel as if you are onstage with the band. This is a too short but wonderful reason to acquire this tape. "Let It Grow" turns the level back up, and Garcia throws the switch. Lesh is the thunder proclaiming his right to exist. Powerful aggressive jams bend into a "Terrapin" scored for Bach organ that ends too briefly. I've never heard a "Terrapin" jammed into Toccata and Fugue in D minor, but this would be a good place to try the combination. Short "Drums" is short, and the back half of the set is played well but never opens out. More's the pity, but the energy seems to diminish in proportion to the distance from "Terrapin Station." Well, we've all traveled from "Terrapin Station" and it takes a lot of acceleration to escape its gravity. "U.S. Blues" is a nice twangy keeper. This is an average show, which means it is well worth having.

Hi - I just stumbled upon your site while searching for the lyrics (or something) for Stagger Lee (love that song!). THANK YOU, for sharing the music. Will you, or anyone seeing this post, point me to your all time favorite tour (e.g. Fall 1985 is excellent!)? Yeah!

Hey now Greg D. Welcome!!

It would be nice if some people chime in and let you know what they dig. Me? I'm weird, I've never thought about it. Of course there's more brilliance in certain tours and certain years, but I look for good in every show.

I've got one suggestion for you -- sign up at Lost Sailor and feel free to post a question asking people there what they think. You might get a whole bunch of opinions because so many dig '77, many dig '73, some might give you Summer '90, someone else might tell you 1969. You could be steered to all sorts of great shows. If anyone ever asked me what to check out... I'd say sample it all!!!

Thanks for the comment; kind ones are always welcome and everyone's always welcome to the tunes! Sugarmag and I love to share what we can!

Peace :)
