Untitled Tuesday Run & Tunes
Neal McCoy - At This Moment (1991, debut, Out of Print... I think.)
Hoo-ahhhhh... it got a wee bit chillier!!
Really it's absolutely insanely cold!!
-34°F right now (-37°C)
The town is half dead it seems. Probably more like mostly dead. So many people almost stop everything or at least as much as possible when the temps are like this. Work was so quiet today. Spent more time in the station than in the ambulance and on calls.
As soon as my shift was over at 9 o'clock, I changed clothes and headed over to the University to get another run in tonight. On the way there the streets were nearly empty. Like a ghost town, in a way. Rec Center was also dead. Often it's hopping with people, lifting weights, running, maybe some basketball or just hanging out. Not tonight. This weather has got people hibernatin', I tell ya what. Soon as it warms up a little, when it's up to about fifteen below or so, life'll start poppin' again. Not right now.
In any case, I got my run in, suffered through the walk from inside back to my truck and when I got back to my house -- heaven... well, it was once I got some logs goin' in the stove. Cleaned up, made some Irish coffee, paid plenty of attention to my dog, now time to rest!

_________· So Far -- 10 lb
Nice run but not easy. I'm not sure why 15 to 16 minutes isn't easy for me. It's such a tiny amount of time yet half way through I'm thinkin' about it being over already. Maybe it's the extra weight I'm a carryin'. Maybe that's makin' me lumber through the last part of each run. Maybe if that weight goes bye bye then running will be easier for me. Just gotta keep tryin' to get rid of it... something else that just ain't easy. Still I'll keep up the running, probably until it kills me.

Through the years I've heard a few songs by Texas native Neal McCoy... and I've liked 'em. So, like I often do, I thought I'd go back to where it started for him. There aren't many copies of his Out of Print debut floating around, but they are findable. Unfortunately, I'm not too sure I like this all that much. The last decade of the 20th Century was an interesting one for country music with Garth Brooks purely leading the way. At This Moment from Neal McCoy was a small part of that new modern country charge through the 1990's. The lyrics here come from a whole host of writers and the usual topics are covered. Plenty of love, loss, and life. Some nice ballads here but not much that really rocks which is too bad, methinks. I suppose it's a decent album but not one that got a lot of notice at the time. Still it solidified Neal McCoy as one who will have the ability to last through the years. He may never have seen the popularity or fame that Garth got or many later on, but he's a good solid singer who, in many of the songs here, harkens back to a traditional country sound while looking ahead to the 2000's. A lot of this makes me feel Texas and that's how I like my country.

Dude. How do you deal?
Just nearly cold enough for ice fog, huh?
This morning we're almost at the magical spot where 40 below meets 40 below...
-38° / -39°C right now.
Last night I felt some ice fog between the front door of the Rec Center and my truck... then drove through a few patches on the way home.
Out here a few miles from downtown and the University, I live near the end of a dirt road, well... a snow road since October, with next to no traffic and no unfrozen water source nearby (where the ice fog mostly comes from) so I don't see any outside now... but where there's traffic I'm sure it's hangin' around! I'm off of work until tomorrow so I'm stickin' here inside all day. I might venture out tonight...
but I don't necessarily want to go anywhere in these temps, that's how one deals with this. You get used to zero and even ten below. That becomes fairly easily bearable. For that and for worse, like this, you keep the proper wardrobe including heavyweight everything! Thermals, flannel-lined jeans/pants, super-duper down-filled jackets, fleece jacket layer under that! And expedition-weight mittens and hat and even a balaclava if you're gonna be outside for more than like 5 or 10 minutes.
Lotta people use jackets and gloves and boots made of fur and skin from animals... those work just as well if not better than plain ol' winter gear which is what I stick with.
Basically you just wanna stay inside!!!
it's 38 below zero? And you live there? what the heck is wrong with you?
