Jer, Bob & Friends @ The Keystone, 32 Years Ago

Listening to music has occurred so little in the past week. That means my running has stopped. Not for long, though.

But here's another show that I was happy to listen to (and I'm about to listen to it again this morning, for the third time in a few days) and I hope some folks out there dig it, too.

I wasn't planning on putting up another so soon but why live by a plan? 2 shows in 2½ days -- definitely not normal. Truth be told, I kind of wish it was normal. The thing is, giving a nice little cushion of time between shows helps me not get tired of it. Adding in 2½ tons of other stuff helps me appreciate the Dead and Jerry even more as the weeks and months and years go by. Unless scientists discover some miracle treatment allowing us to live till about 2 or 300 years of age, I'll never get to listen to every show this way... but I'm gonna enjoy the heck out of everything I do Press Play on!

How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),
Catfish John, Mystery Train

3rd Set
Tore Up Over You, C.C. Rider, (I'm A) Road Runner

A nice Set 1 but it's Set 2 when the band seems to really kick it up. Matt Kelly, who played harmonica on the middle two songs of the first set, comes out for all of Sets 2 & 3, as does someone else to play rhythm guitar, a close friend of Jerry's -- Bob Weir.

There's a small and weird sound problem of some sort during How Sweet It Is, but only for the first half or so. It sounds like someone's squeezing the neck of a goose and each time the goose's neck gets squeezed, a goose honk kinda noise occurs. It's not too bad, though, and it's gone soon enough. Also, the mix isn't always dead on even: Weir's off in one channel along with Hopkins while Kelly's over in the other. Jerry's guitar, sorta sadly, dominates in one channel but his voice and Kahn's bass and drums are all right up the middle. Despite these facts, which don't really mess with music, the overall sound is still pretty sweet. Just enjoy!

Bobby's rhythm guitar on Catfish John I'm totally diggin'. I think it's cool as shit he sat in this night. He's not a huge addition to the music but since the JGB had no one else on guitar except Jer,
it's a little different. Nicky Hopkins also really helps this song shine. He was with the band for only not even 5 months but it's like he and Jerry (and Bobby) have been playing this tune for years together.

The first set of music from Jerry & Bobby in 1976 doesn't consist of that many songs, but Catfish John and Mystery Train, while the former doesn't transition into the latter, still accounts for almost 40 great minutes!
I listen to a huge variety of music but this is just heaven to me.

A great way to get people really shakin' again -- Tore Up. Oh man! Such a great groove once again that these guys are in. Jerry is just gorgeous on lead while again Bob adds so nicely on rhythm. To leave anyone else out would just be dumb: a great freakin' sound here from everyone! 'Scuse me while I get up and dance around my house for a few minutes?!

Bob adds some more on the next tune, in fact with him at the mic and singin', plus stepping up what he adds on rhythm, this almost becomes the BWB rather than the JGB.
Jerry and Merl Saunders gave C.C. Rider a spin early in '74, quite possibly only because a guest came out. And even though it didn't debut with the Grateful Dead until late in 1979, Bobby was quite familiar with it all through '75 while playing it with Kingfish.

Somewhere a little past 2 in the morning, Road Runner finally finishes the night off. It's sort of an anti-climatic ending, methinks, compared to the 2nd Set, but I bet bein' there, those few extra songs were better than goin' home!

Since festivities on New Year's Eve for the Dead really started to take off after this, '75 would be the last time there'd be a Jerry show on this night. All in all a pretty nice 2+ hours of music. Definitely an interesting piece of history.

Coincidentally, of all the NYE shows he could've picked,
Bob at eCache gave this '75 show a listen today, too.
He put up a nice review so check it out
if you'd like another perspective.

08 Celebration of What, exactly?

WOOHOOOOO, it's 2008 in eastern Australia. Just a minute ago I watched the (still going on) fireworks there live on TV (on Fox News.)

But around the world, how does spending millions upon millions of dollars each every December 31st help people who suffer in poverty?

One of the saddest things I ever saw on television -- watching some of the celebrations at the Millennium, on ABC with Peter Jennings hosting, there was a correspondent in Eritrea, I think. At midnight for that Time Zone, he, the reporter, did a brief live shot from a refugee camp in the desert.

There was No celebrating. No one even clapping. No one was even seen. The tents were dark and quiet.

People there could care less that it had just turned from 1999 to 2000.

They could care less that it was now Saturday and no longer Friday.

They just wanted a place to live that was safe and without war.

Many just wanted food and water so they could keep living... and so they could keep their children alive, as well.

When so many human souls live in such horrible conditions, what exactly is there to celebrate on New Year's Eve?

The thought of this night -- it makes me so sad. It pains me... it literally hurts me.

What exactly is there to celebrate? Ya know what tomorrow is? It'll be Tuesday... just another day.

NYE is just an excuse to shoot off fireworks, have a party, and selfishly spend money without a single care in the world for the needless suffering of others.

Hooray.

p.s. i still wish happiness and good health to everyone in '08.

Peace, Love, and Support The Troops!

Yada yada Yawwwn WHERE'S MY COFFEE?!?

I got nothin'.

Worked on Saturday night. Shift was over Sunday morning at 9 a.m. when football was starting. I crashed. Week 17, the last week of the regular season, and I slept right through it.
At least I saw the great Pats-Giants game Saturday before my shift.

Oh, and not only football did I sleep through, but I slept right through sunlight, too.
This far north, tis black at 9 in the morning so black sky is all I've seen for... I need coffee bad 'cause figuring out lengths of time I don't feel like doing.

So I missed the first 2/3 of Sunday's games on TV ... finally woke up briefly and watched the Titans-Colts ... and then fell asleep again!

Now it's close to midnight and I've finally finally just woken up. This is morning for me? I'm still gonna need a serious nap later but I guess so.

More sleep I'll need 'cause I've gotta work another night shift in a little less than 24 hours from now. Shift then a day and a half off then a shift. Normal. But not normal to be working on New Years Eve. Some people must and I be one of 'em. As the clock strikes midnight for my time zone, who knows where I'll be -- driving down the road maybe, at the hospital making sure a patient is getting taken care of, taking care of a patient in someone's house, at the station maybe doing a quick disinfect and cleanup of the inside of the ambulance. There's no way to know. One thing's for sure, it'll be a busy night as party revelers will be gettin' themselves into a mess or two. That's the nature of NYE. Ahhh alcohol... it helps give me a job!

Ahh, Spring in O-Town with the Good Ol' Grateful Dead

It's depressing -- 5 days without a run now. I'm not about to slash my wrists or anything, I guess it hasn't technically depressed me... but this time has freakin' stunk, I tell ya what. No exercise and feelin' like a slug -- not good. By the time I'm able to get the gym again, 6 days will have passed. Oh joy. The last two I should have run ... if I wasn't battling and getting over this brief cold.

At this 9 o'clock hour as I type this I'm supposed to be starting an overnight shift ... but yesterday I made some calls and switched nights with someone and I'll be taking Saturday night instead. It's been a crappy couple days off. Have been sequestered inside all dang day long, times 2, just sleepin' and takin' it easy, stuffin' meself with plenty o' Vitamin C. The episodes of needing to blow my nose every minute finally stopped about 24 hours ago ... so I knew I was on my way to recovery. Feelin' better I am, and hopefully tomorrow I'll even be able to run again before work.

Now, 'tis time again, kids, for that great old American fun time band, in America's great old fun time capital, well, not exactly in it, but very close to it ... Lake Buena Vista, the home of Mickey Mouse and various dwarves and a family of pants-less ducks, is just down the road a few miles from Orlando.

So shall we go, you and I while we can?

It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

Whoa! What a charge there is in the Jack Straw to start the festivities on this first of three shows on the Dead's very first time in Orlando. I saw a pretty good amount of shows when Bruce Hornsby was a member of the band but it just might be possible that I never saw a Jack Straw during that time... or never had a copy of a show with one in the years that followed. The reason I say that is because Bruce takes a line here and that's not something I remember. Oh well, it's not like remembering exact details is something possible with me anyway. What I do know is when Bruce takes that line, he just nails it and the crowd LOVES it!!! Wow!! That was a treat!!! The first song of a show is often incredibly spirited ... it's often a matter of whether or not that is sustained for the rest of the night.

Sugaree -- ahhhh. I'm almost at a loss for words here. No, it's not even close to the best ever, but it still is oh so sweet! I'm so glad this a soundboard. This particular night, unless the sound quality was just abnormally unbelievable for an Aud, would be wasted without this beautifully clear sound.

Now, it's not often I rave about a Wang Dang Doodle. Truly it's often not really worth mentioning. Not that it's a bad song, I like it just fine but it's just one that's usually just there and never really that special. I was actually blown away by a Wang Dang recently, with Phil & Friends 4-20-98. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this nights. Everyone's extremely together makin' for a really great playing of this song. Bruce especially. I swear, it's like he's been in this band for years and years the way he fills in so perfectly. And he continues yet again on Row Jimmy. So far I'm not sure if there's been a bad note played!

After a flawless BT Wind, what came next makes this show nearly legendary. Three weeks before, there was a bust-out of almost monumental proportions -- the much loved Jerry tune Reuben and Cherise making its first ever Dead show appearance on the first night of the tour in Landover. Days went by and it made another appearance on Long Island. Now here it is again, the 3rd and final time in the Spring Tour.

So few got so lucky to hear it while so many suffered in agony from not being there.
I was out west in Utah for all of Spring Tour but Vegas, Cal Expo, and Shoreline was next after Orlando. I saw 7 of those 8 shows -- no Reuben. Went down to L.A. for a one-night stand there on the first of June -- no Reuben. Summer Tour (with still a couple weeks of Spring left) started up and right after finals, I made it cross country straight to D.C. to see much of the last half of the tour -- no Reuben. They did play it once more, early on in the tour, in Ohio. But that was it. Four measly times. Nooooooo, they couldn't debut it when I was at the years first shows in Oakland in February, or play it out west, not even once. Ahhhh well, such is life.

On this night in O-Town, the kids they enjoyed Reuben and they enjoyed the hell out of it! I'm happy for 'em, those that were there. And I'm happy for this soundboard!

Set 2! I am a huge proponent of getting things started on the raucous side and Crazy Fingers just doesn't do that at all. But that's okay here. Jerry has one minor lyric flub that's hardly even worth mentioning because the song flows so beautifully along. In the last few minutes Phil and Jerry steer it so smoothly into the night. This band is just unbelievable, I'm just in awe. They're so good at this!

Some notes of Playin' bring a hard left turn and away we go! God, I love listening to this. There's so much going on: you can zoom in on Bobby playin' around on rhythm guitar, or on Jerry, the central figure when Bob's not singing, constantly noodling away on lead, or on Phil layin' down this incredible backbone on bass, or Bruce all jazzy on piano, with Mickey and Billy never missing a beat on drums, and Vince a little bit in there somewhere, I think -- mmmm, what a great jam they've got goin' on.

Time for a brief break from that with the emergence of UJB. Bruce has picked up his accordion here so we've another new sound to hear. I think it's actually a little annoying at times. Just a weird sound to hear within a Dead song. He sure does know how to play it interestingly, though!

Soon enough the UJB-Playin' sandwich moves back to a Playin' theme and Bruce's accordion takes on a Space-ish sound to it. I was really diggin' something in particular Jerry was doin' for a moment near the beginning. Couldn't place my finger on exactly what it was but almost familiar sounding (but definitely not Playin'-related.) The Jam evolves rather spacily and a little erratic, but of course still all held together by musicians who know their craft and they know it well. They might give the appearance that each instrument is out there on its own when in reality each of them is in tune with the other. Separately but together they build up this massive crescendo of sound into what just about blew my mind, holy cow, there's this rapid cosmic collision of... just this interplanetary moment of... where everything just explodes and... wow. I don't really know what it was, it all happened so fast, officer!! Mmmm. That's the feeling I'm left with! Mmmm!

From there the jam devolves, sliding away and dissolving into more Space-like territory rather than an actual jam. Kinda like Space in reverse, sorta, as they eventually wind it down and let the guys with the drum sticks take over.

Unfortunately, and, man, I hate when there's an "unfortunately" to mention, unfortunately here's the first time in the show that I'm not really into it. Normally I dig Drums, always a fan of hearin' and bein' a part of drum circles, always thought of these guys as my inspiration when I was bangin' away putting in my part of the music. But on this night from Mickey and Billy, I wasn't really feelin' it. A little uninspired perhaps. It does get better, methinks, when Mickey moves to the beam and starts gettin' experimental with all of his electronic percussion dealies and such.

Space is... I'm out of adjectives. Out of this world good? Definitely definitely definitely an improvement over Drums. They explore so many cool corners of the universe before treating everyone to a little Phil time. He's been all over this show on bass but how about a step up to mic? Is Box of Rain ever bad? There's something so soothing about Jerry singing along.
This one gave me a big ol' smile!!

The end of the show steams ahead in a manner perfectly in line with the greatness before it. I'm tellin' ya, not a note out of place!

With Bruce back on accordion, some quiet Dylan for the encore brought the crowd down to where they could probably just relax, enjoy, and walk into the warm Florida night on top of the world.

That was a slice of 1991 heaven. Excellent show. This pick was a little less random than my usual method. I didn't pick it for the setlist, just knew I wanteda SBD from Spring '91 but not from one of the usual northeast locations. So glad I picked this one!

NJ, Hampton, Go Read It

Jerry Garcia Band -- Pure Jerry Hampton Coliseum 11-9-91 CD coverIt's not like me to often link to other blogs but for the 2nd time in a couple days now I'm wanting to, and again 'tis for another Person from Jersey, yes, a fellow New Jerseyan... but he's from South Jersey which, well... to me that might as well be Mississippi compared to North Jersey. Okay, that's a little extreme. Aside from Long Beach Island, which is mostly mid-state, the most south I ever went on a
(semi-)regular basis was to the Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel and Rutgers in New Brunswick. North Jersey is a place I know my way around -- malls, suburbs, many of the most expensive to live zip codes in the entire country, highways, traffic, Hoboken, tunnels, bridges, The Meadowlands. That's the NJ I know.

South Jersey is just foreign. There's like farmland down there, corn and all that stuff! And pinelands... and the Army, the Air Force and bombing ranges, plus pink elephants and crazy devil monsters... weird place. North Jersey is specifically where my heart is, not really New Jersey as a whole, but even though I rag on South Jersey, I'm sure in many ways it's totally a much better place to live than many places up north. It's not for me but it's a part of this great nation that I really still do dig.

In South Jersey and in every place weird, funky, fun, cold, warm, wet, dry, boring, cool... or Brooklyn, there are Deadhead brothers and sisters who live and breathe with SYF in their DNA (wish I heard from more of y'all!) and Bob from eCache is one of those people. Yesterday he put up a cool review of a Fall '91 Jerry Garcia Band show, from 11/9/91 at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia. That show was released as one of the Pure Jerry series... and coincidentally the most recent JGB show I listened to was also from Hampton, well, a different one, in New England. Anyway, if you're a Deadhead reading this, go on over and check out eCache and Bob's review! He knows his Jerry!

Oh, and hey, even if you're not a Deadhead, cruise on over anyway 'cause Bob's a real live regular nice guy with content on his blog that isn't Dead-related only, lots of good stuff!

twinkly twinkly, thank you, thank you very much

Yeah, it's now past Christmas but I just found this (by accident) this morning, posted by Sandra Lynn who's a Jersey girl like I would be... if I was a girl which I'm not but I'm from Jersey, yo, so we've got that in common. Truly if this video was from somewhere like Dayton or Las Cruces ... or Canarsie, I wouldn't give a darn. But I was like -- Hey, the Elvis House, I know that place! I grew up just a few miles away. So thanks, Sandra, for posting this up! May I call you Sandra? Sandra Lynn? Person from Jersey, it'll be.

Mahwah, New Jersey is where this place is, in northwest Bergen County about 25 miles (west northwest) from midtown Manhattan. The house is so named 'cause the dude who lives there made (does still make?) a good living as an Elvis impersonator. (I didn't know there was such a demand for Elvis Costello impersonators!)

On the Grand Scale of Christmas lights on people's homes, this ranks Wayyyyy up there when it comes to money spent on electricity plus brightness, twinklyness, famousness, etcness. I'm sure there are many in America who top this, but when you're talkin' Top 1% overall across the whole nation, this is one of those!

I'm not gonna check but I wouldn't be surprised if this house had its own Wikipedia page! I did check one thing, I typed in -- "elvis house" mahwah -- and whoa, this place is a lot more famous that I knew... but I'm not really surprised. Surely it's been in the major newspaper the Bergen Record before, and probably more than likely on the local NYC news. Each December there'd be a line of cars, especially on the weekend, to see this house. I grew up not too far away and made a trek or two over there with friends... with Amanda I'm rememberin' now, yeah, good Christmastime that was!

I also had 2 friends (brothers) whose family moved over to this very street (that's their property on the right side as the car drives up) so from hangin' out at their house sometimes, this scene became no real big deal for me. Still pretty impressive as far as twinkly Christmas lights go.

Here's another 8 seconds worth:

Pictures found without much trouble in the Google link above probably do it better justice (or the two pics in the link I put in Comments) ... but seein' it in person is how you really must see it so go ahead and make plans now!

Super Boring Useless Day Cold Complaint

KleenexAll I wanted to do today was NOTHING. Well, nothing + a run. That's it! Other than nothing + a run, I wanted to accomplish zip, zilch, nada, zero, and any other words that mean NOTHING which I should know in French, Russian, and Turkish but they just ain't coming to mind, that is if I ever knew them in the first place. (Learning languages doesn't always mean learning every single word!)

After working a 24 hour shift (which I did Christmas Eve -> Christmas day) where I get a spot of sleep, a spot of sleep there, all I wanna do is have a pint, sleep for maybe half a day, and then be the laziest sum-biotche on Earth... + go for a run.

No run so I failed, kind of, I mean it's not that big of a deal but it is but it's not but whatever.

The worst part of everything in this life today -- somebody gave me a cold.

Seriously?!? When you're an EMT for the community, even on Christmas, you come into contact with a loooooooooooooooot of people and if they're not lonely senior citizens they're wounded people and if they're not wounded people they're looney people and if they're not looney people then they're freakin' sick in some way and that could be as little as a cold and I just typed all this without looking at the keyboard and with TWO fingers, sometimes three, I think, and since I only use two or three fingers and I'm kinda fast then hey, that's not bad especially....

especially since I'm half whacked outta my gourd, it seems, on over-the-counter Cold/Allergy medication which isn't doing A DAMN THING FOR ME except making me loopy.

These freakin' pills DON'T WORK. Take 2 for 8 hours or something like that. What if two doesn't work? Take 2 more. What if 4 in an hour doesn't work? Take 2 more, of course. 6 in an hour and a half? And still for my nose they do NOTHING. Yay.

I wanna watch a movie but my head it so hazy that I might as well just watch paint dry 'cause I think I'd be able to concentrate on paint but a film? Haaa!

The worst part, didn't I say that already? If I didn't then I thought it. I could scroll up and check but I don't wanna.

Anyway, the worst part is I go through these periods of having to blow my nose EVERY FREAKIN' MINUTE. Très annoying. Aside from that ticking me off quite severely, I basically feel fine... except for the head cloudiness because of the stoopid ass cold tablet dealies which HAVE DONE NOTHING.

Fun day. Sleep was good. Being awake sucked. At least I don't have to work until Friday!

Now, since this post is nothing but shlum, and frankly if shlum isn't a word then it is now and if it means something else, then it has a new meaning now, since this shlum is so pointless and really I have no idea why I'm typing it or why I'll Publish it... or what my next thought even will be, I apologize for taking up space in the world today even if it's just with this idiotic moronic post that I'm guessing not more than 3 people will even read all the way through... and if you did -- WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

That is all. Time to blow my damn nose.

---------

Whatever.

Almost Christmas... I'm Off To Work

Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead dressed as Santa Claus a.k.a. Jolly Ol' St. Nick a.k.a. Father Christmas
you'll never roast my chestnuts over an open fire!

Merry Christmas animated dealie sign 3

Yep, the Griswolds are back...

Oi! Oh, man... seriously, why is the world still rotating today? When I got home from the bar at whatever o'clock in the morning it was, only a few freakin' hours ago, I'm pretty sure all I wanted was for some type of worldly catastrophic event to take place that would mean I wouldn't ever have to wake up for work!

Here's the deal -- drinking a lot when you don't drink a lot anymore... whoa. Might as well, might as well, might as well just skip the drinking and take a jackhammer straight to my skull. Come on, Advil, work, baby! It's not even like I was drinking to get plastered. Somehow the glass kept getting filled with beer and so that meant each time I had to eventually empty it into my stomach! Dems da rulez, yo -- No Beer Wasted. Duh.

Now it's like coming up on 8 a.m. as I type this and I have to work a 24 hour shift starting at 9 ... haaaa! luckily not until 9 o'clock tonight, Christmas Eve -» through Christmas morning -» through Christmas day -» 9 p.m. Christmas night. I have no idea what bar in town will be open but when my shift's over, it'll probably be pitcher time again, that or just pour me Guinness by the pint and I'll be forgetting Christmas with each and every hoist. Ahhhh... or I'll just come back to my bed and collapse. We shall see, we shall see.

Probably no way that I'll run today. Even though the gym's open until 6 p.m. this evening, I'm fairly sure I've written that off already. After my run last night, man, I was so stoked for a run today. Just the mere thought of stepping foot on the track is making me shudder in horror.
Stoopid alcohol.

So for now I've got 12+ hours to get some more sleep and recover from this. If I had to start a shift in an hour, that would be so wicked irresponsible. I think, at least I hope, I've left that kind of irresponsibility way in the past. Mayhaps if I worked at Mickey D's I'd tell them to kiss my shiny metal ass, I quit... but my job is slightly more important than that so I'll be there with bells on, or I would if I wore bells, which I don't, so no bells, nevermind. But if it's anything like Thanksgiving then it'll be an interesting shift with interesting calls. Still, perhaps I shoulda flown to Dutch Harbor for a few days. All I woulda done there is drank myself silly with strangers and Christmas would have been actively happening just as much as it is here. Maybe the best place to go to avoid the holiday would be, oh, Saudi Arabia? Yemen? Something like that.

Anyway, I didn't plan to listen to Christmas tunes this late into the season but this happens and that happens and I didn't want to wait on this until next year so here it is now...

Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me!

Jeremy Camp - Beyond Measure (2006)
Kinda feelin' like a rock star! Okay, perhaps that's a little dramatic. Because of a brilliant light bulb moment earlier, I didn't have to sweet talk my way into free run time at the gym since I don't have a membership. Truthfully I was lookin' forward to it... me woulda liked the challenge. Instead I dropped by the station and asked if we also had a Guest Pass for the other indoor running track in town since the University's all closed down for a few days. Low and behold... ta daaaaaa, one Unlimited Use Guest Pass for all EMS personnel. Sweeeeeet.

So after savoring a mucho unexpected Bears trouncing of the Packers, I got my Zzzzzzzz's and tonight at 8 I was ready for a run! Hallelujah, baby!

This running thing is way addicting. So long as my body doesn't fall apart, tis a great thing to be doing! Got to the gym, showed by Guest Pass, showed my EMS I.D., signed the sheet, and within minutes I was on their track.

Soon as I post this, time to head on out again, meet up with some friends for some Sunday night Sam Adams. Maybe some Guinness, probably some Guinness, at least a pints worth. Pitchers of Sam & a pint of Guinness, yes, that sounds nice, the steak to the rest of the meal or something like that. What better way to end the night after a run than with a trillion beer calories?! Ahh well, no work until 9 p.m. Christmas Eve and with so few working tomorrow, a good night to enjoy out. Blowing money like this happens so infrequently... not something I like to do, the layin' down of the cash that is, but at least it helps the local economy! So, without further ado, let me wrap this up so I can head on out the door 'cause there's a barstool in town with my name on it (and I'm gettin' thirsty!!!!)

The North Face trail running shoe -- good for use in the Appalachian Mountains ... but seriously, they are rather small compared to the Rocky Mountains ... Sierra Nevada are sweet, too. Would definitely use 'em in the Alps, that's for sure. One thing's for sure -- Jerry Garcia or Bob Weir or Phil Lesh probably never went running on January 1st. Probably the same with Brent Mydland. Why January 1st? Just seems like a day that makes the most sense. Maybe Christmas. Run Time: 15 minutes 30 seconds

Awesome run. Practically effortless. I really don't know why sometimes it's not so easy when other times I'm left feeling like I was when I hit my end cue tonight. I may have only added 1 whole whopping second to my Run Time... but since I finished with ease, I am perfectly satisfied! And in the very first song of my next run, I'll have eclipsed my November Run Time Total which is another achievement in itself. Still I'm about a billion hours, it seems, away from running a marathon. Ah well, I guess that's not necessarily the main goal anyway. Just wanna get some good exercise, get the cardiovascular system workin' more than normal, get the heart rate up, keep my blood pressure down, burn off some calories, stay as fit as possible and healthy, and stave off cancer! A-freakin'-men to that!

There was a time when I listened to a Christian music station a whole lot and on it they often played a few tunes from Jeremy Camp, songs that had been on the Christian chart, songs that really resonated with listeners. I'm sure so many of his songs do but the way radio works, they don't play everything, unfortunately. In any case, I've already been introduced to this guy's music, at least on a small scale. Now I get to expand a little.

This is just another amazing album that does nothing but raise up God in every song. If it's not direct praise in the lyrics then it's all about His greatness and what He can do for those that just wanna open themselves up to allowing God to help out in life.

Musically this ain't fluff. I'm often wary of Christian music; when the sound is too "adult contemporary" boring on pop -- well, I'm kind of frowning with bitterness just thinking about it. Great music that often is, and great messages in the lyrics, but that doesn't mean it's enjoyable by everyone. Usually stuff like that is tolerable but more useful for falling asleep to.

Jeremy Camp, on the otherhand, his music just screams to be turned up!!!! Yeah, that's the Christian music me likey likey! A few of these most recent albums have been excellent to run to. A few dozen more just like this and that's gonna make for a lot of great runs, at least as far as the music goes!

I'm in a really bad spot. Very bad. Horrible. Right now, this is the worst thing that has ever happened to me this whole morning since I got back last night from hangin', puttin' away pitchers, and shootin' some stick. Considering I just woke up, it's the only thing that's happened to me this morning so I'd hafta say all is truly well then. Not like my house is on fire or nuttin'. My dog's happy. I'm a little tired and craving ice cream and/or Reese's Peanut Butter cups... but what else is new?

Last night I was out wayyyy too late and I wanna post this show in the first half of the day. Why? That's classified. Bears-Packers game is on at 9 a.m. ... not that the Bears are heading to the Playoffs but Da Bearz are my favorite team and why would anyone not want to watch Brett Favre?! (He's sooooo dreamy... nooooo, that's not what I think, that's what the girls think. Me, I like watching a future Hall of Fame QB who's one of the best ever! No (American) football fan should pass on that opportunity!) And then after the game I need a nap. And then tonight I need to run. So this morning is when it NEEDS to go up. If it doesn't then I just might as well give up on life as we know it. Okay, the consequences would not have to come to that... a wee bit of an exageration. But I really want it up this morning...

so in order to post this show before the game, I had to wake up at 6:30 after so little sleep
(that's what's so horrible.) It's just not my style to la di da di da post a show (or an album) and leave it at that. For many mp3 bloggers that's perfectly fine, that's what they do... but not me, yo, especially considering that this blog isn't strictly devoted to posting albums and shows in mp3 form... and also especially when I put up GD & stuff. And while I may have listened to this show already a couple days ago, me likes to give another listen when I write (type) it up. Okay? Okay. Capisce? Bueno.

Coffee's made so here we go, alright?!

Something Jerry never did in the later years -- an East Coast Summer Tour. This show happened in midst of one such tour in '84. Nine shows plus one in Chicago if I remember correctly; and nowhere did he play more than 1 night in a row except New Hampshire and East Setauket, Long Island, New York (but for some reason not in consecutive nights for the latter.)

Here he is on the beautiful New Hampshire Seacoast, at what is certainly one of the most historic venues in all of New England. This is night number two and the last time Jerry would play here... in the same music hall that's giving me shivers before I can even type it... in the same hall that Bob played that horrible night of 8/9/95.

From the Casino Ballroom website:
"One summer evening in 1995 soon became an unforgettable night when Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead performed with his band Ratdog on the eve of Jerry Garcia's death. Thousands of Garcia fans and numerous television crews surrounded the building, mirroring, in an instant, the fateful Jethro Tull concert some 15 years prior. However, with the new management in place, event security on tight duty and the new approach to customer service, the night went off without a hitch and has proven to be one of the most revered shows in the Casino Ballroom's history."

Enough with the sadness, on with the JGB...

Cats
is a decent way to start the show, fairly standard and good but not even close to what'll come. Knockin' rolls along nicely until Jerry really starts gettin' into it, so much so that the crowd knows it, feels it, and oh so loves. They are truly alive for the first time on this August evening. The sound of the Aud recording here is simply delectable, for want of describing the sound of a show as I never have before. Jerry almost seems lost in the song but lost in only a good way. Knockin' would be the saddest song in the world 11 years later with Ratdog in this very room ... but here it's just downright fun!

I Second That Emotion continues with more great Jerry. Melvin is helping light the way right behind him. The energy is just so perfect here to get them kids to dance and shake their bones, I tell ya what! Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile!!!

The pace shifts gears with Mississippi Moon. Not a note out of place! But it's Tangled to close the set that brings this show back to Overdrive! Heaven on Earth on this night was located in none other than the Granite State with the salty sea air just outside the Casino's doors. While the ocean rests in the night, Jerry does the opposite and gets so completely into this great Dylan tune that he has seemingly made his own. The crowd acknowledges yet another high point of the set and everything is just amazing. But it gets better! When the tune could have shut down and it would have been Half Time, what happens? Still more to come, over 7 more minutes of Pure Jerry ripping through such a sweet jam, just blazing through it! John Kahn on bass must've really felt the magic too 'cause he starts really cranking it out, as well, right alongside the fire that was Garcia. Holy freakin' cow!!!

There's just about no better way in the world to spend a little over an hour of my time. When that comes to an end, I'm tellin' ya, Press Stop and just bask in it awhile before going on to Set 2.

The second set rolls right along starting with such a sweet Sugaree. Ohhhh! ... I don't even want to try to describe it. It's meticulous and long and so appreciated by the New England crowd. Run For The Roses gives nothing but more of the same. Not quite as long as the Set 2 opener, but perfectly played.

Unfortunately some crap is on the horizon, sort of. With the beginning of Get Out Of My Life, the sound quality takes a minor nosedive -- it gets slightly muddy and/or a little bit distant sounding. Prior to this point it was mostly clear without any annoyance at all. It's doesn't get terribly bad but still a little letdown. If it had been an A/A+ Aud to this point, here it's more like B+. A shame but what are ya gonna do?

For no good reason, it seems like that one song is the only one when the recording is less than desirable, at least to my ears. Thankfully it's not as long as most of the rest and when it's over, for whatever reason, the sound returns to normal. Midnight Moonlight closes the brief set and things get kicked back up a couple notches. Only 4 songs were played, like 15 minutes less than Set 1, but solid and well worth every cent, I'm sure!

Lastly, the encore did its part to let no one leave just happy but with a super-huge smile splashed across their face. Rhapsody In Red mayhaps could have been been a bit on the disappointing side if the band was done and gone in no time at all. Instead they take what could very easily be a rather quick 6 minute encore and turn it into more than double that. Mmmm! Whew, if the Dead maybe closed the 1st Set with this... wow! But nope, never so... so we give thanks to Jerry for tremendous JGB shows like this one. Beautiful stuff here. When it wasn't gorgeous it was flat out smokin' hot and that makes me one happy camper! (And proud to have been born in New Hampshire!!)

Bah Damn Humbug

Yeah, so what the hell??? I got off work a half hour ago at 9, just finished a 12 hour shift, and I'm stoked for a run. What do I find out -- The Rec Center at University closed early. No frickin' way!!

Alright, after standing outside in the 12 below night cursing those who didn't think that I wanted to get some exercise in after work tonight, I instantly devise a Plan B -- head on down to the other gym in town where I know there's an indoor track. And when I get there: Closed. What?! Oh, come onnnnn!!!! I didn't have a pass for that gym, wasn't about to fill out paperwork for a membership but I knew the odds were in my favor that I could show my EMS I.D. and finagle 15½ minutes of track time for no fee. Woulda been a piece of cake, I tell ya what.
Apparently they close at 9 on Saturday. So ain't that swell.

Now I'm in a bad mood. And now I know that "finagle" is an actual word but it's not an accurate word here. "Crafty and deceitful" it says. Crafty yes. Deceitful no.

In any case, Bah freakin' Humbug I'm pissed. I skipped running yesterday, and I thought there'd be no problem for getting a run in tonight. Damn it all to heck.

Oh well. No work tomorrow and according to the sign on the door at the Rec Center, they're closed until Wednesday. Great. Thanks, people. Yup, thanks so much.

So tomorrow I've gotta put my crafty plan in place and git me 15½ minutes of free track time.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy?
Well, no exercise will make me a fat boy who'll probably develop diabetes... DO... NOT... WANT... THAT! So must exercise.

Now -- time to shower and get a ride to the bar 'cause it be pitcher time!

No matter when, Random Acts of Kindness are a beautiful thing!

This morning I saw the following on CNN Headline News ... across the internet it's getting a whopping load of NON-attention... just one single website for a TV station in Bowling Green, Kentucky is carrying this story! The internet's pretty big, right? [update: another in NC now has it, a few minutes after I first checked.]

Anonymous North Carolina Man
Pays For All Mail Sent to Armed Forces

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. -- It's a random act of kindness that has everyone in the town of Waynesville, NC talking. Someone picked up the tab for every single piece of postage being sent to members of the armed forces serving oversees.

Its four days before Christmas. You expect the post office parking lot to be full, the doors to be swinging, and the lines to be long.

But no one could have expected this: free postage for every package being sent to American military serving overseas.

I Could Use Some Heroin Right About Now

Delirious? -- Touch (2002)
Work. 12 hours here. 12 hours there. 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Friday? Not quite. I've now got Friday off... but I work Saturday. Sometimes 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. -- the overnight shift. Sometimes time flies right by. Other times it drags on and on and on and on and on and on and on... today was 12 hours again... or was it really like 20?

Dealing with wife and child abuse is just so fun, especially at Christmastime, and especially when it tumbles through the door into the -25 degree night. Listen, when you get so wasted that you can barely walk but still you feel the need to throw your wife and kid into the wall... and into the TV... and down the stairs... please, at least keep it indoors. Thank you.

The North Face trail running shoe -- good for use in the Appalachian Mountains ... but seriously, they are rather small compared to the Rocky Mountains ... Sierra Nevada are sweet, too. Well, after that lovely last call at work, my spirits were so high, so full of hope for humanity I was... yay and fa la la la la and joy to the world and Kiss My Ass.

I was still determined to get a run in tonight. Shift done, changed clothes, headed to the Rec Center, the usual... and I got my run in.

After such a crappy night at work, twasn't so easy to concentrate on the music... and not concentrating on the music means I'm more able to pay attention to how lame running is. It truly bites. There's nothing whatsoever pleasant about the act... but it's the result that drives me and so I persisted towards my end cue.

Mentally -- not a nice time on the track. Physically -- no problem to speak of. Made my time, I did, that's what matters. Better to run for 15½ minutes then get no exercise at all!

Kickin' back now in the comfort of my house, stove's a burnin', Cassidy the wonder dog - he's glad I'm back and giving him cookies, but all I wanna do is be unconscious. I've never done heroin, wouldn't even know where to get any, not about to start anytime soon... but if I could just fast forward to tomorrow morning, that would be very desirable after this night.

If it wasn't like 25 below zero I'd make a call or two and see if I can scare someone up for a pitcher or three. Still a possibility.

Good stuff. This was my first time hearing Delirious? That wasn't a question. It was. Most Christian music I listen to is for the first time. Most all music I listen to is for the first time nowadays, it seems, but not listening to music Christian music, so much of it I have no idea about whereas when I play some country or jazz (or whatever) by someone I've never heard of before, usually I know what I'm gettin' into. Not with this. What I found out -- good stuff! Apparently Delirious? is a band that has sought success both within Christian music circles as well as in the mainstream market. Their lyrics have God right at the center yet they never invoke His name while singing all about His glory. Any Christian can read perfectly into what's here and appreciate it tremendously. While those who don't care for Christian lyrics, they'd find these to be just fine. The music is a great "alternative" modern sound that some compare to U2 and Coldplay and Radiohead. What this definitely isn't -- foofy Christian "adult alternative" that might be pleasing to your pastor's grandma. Nope, that's not what this is and that's why it's good, at least to me. For a more in depth review, there's a pretty good one at ChristianityToday.

Do Something Or Shut The ... Up!

What good does complaining do?

New York City subway sign - Chambers St / World Trade Center

Take an issue like, oh, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) voting to raise fares on New York City unlimited ride monthly MetroCards... or whatever the heck they're specifically called.

I'm sure many folks out there in the land of this whole interweb dealie are complaining to their hearts delight on their blog, folks like my favorite Brooklyn blogger Erica. She rocks, she puts up great post after great post with some wacky fun thrown in for good measure... she calls people dooshbag which I've adopted even though calling people names I don't especially care to do. But when I do, dooshbag's usually pretty accurate!!

In any case...

the way I see it, complaining on a blog accomplishes next to jack diddly squat. Well, I mean, you do have the chance to get something off your chest. I guess that's better than strapping a couple guns to your person (God, I hate that term) along with a few extra clips or magazines or whatever you wanna call the things that holds the bullets and going to some school or place of business or wherever people gather to start blowing random people away because you're mad as hell and you're just not gonna freakin' take it anymore.

Call me crazy but I guess any time that can be prevented, that's a good thing.

Alright, so a fare hike probably won't drive anyone to go to such extreme lengths but really, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. Sad, huh? Annnnyway... mayhaps a complaint on your blog also garners some sympathy. "Woe is me, this bites and I'm kinda down about it but I'm also feelin' angry!!! And I wouldn't mind a cyber hug or two." Okay, that might work, as well.

What else does complaining do? Does complaining get anything changed? There have been times, though I can't specifically name any, when the power of bloggers became the power of the people and positive change took place. It can happen.

Let's look at the cold hard facts, shall we, straight to the numbers -- okay, I don't have numbers but seriously, compared to the sheer number of complaints posted each and every day to blogs of the world, how often does that alone bring about change? What's the percentage of positive outcomes? .000000000000002187004% maybe? Something like that, right? Give or take a few zeros.

What if, say, twenty thousand people complained to actual real live human beings, as useless as the people being complained to might truly be, using actual letters folded and put inside actual envelopes mailed using actual stamps? It's often difficult to be optimistic about positive change coming about... especially when you don't know if anyone else in the world is also going to speak out so vocally about the same issue that concerns you... and especially when you're dealing with the government!

"My one letter won't do anything," you might say to yourself.

Yeah, well, my one vote in an election won't do anything either. And if my one vote won't help get anyone new in office, then your one vote doesn't mean anything, as well. No one's one vote will make a difference. Hell, why doesn't everyone just not f-ing vote!?!?

But look, my vote plus someone else's vote multiplied exponentially, well then, we just might have a way to bring about change. Hmmm...

Okay, similarly but concerning... poverty, for example. It's great if 100,000 people say that they truly care about poverty in the world. It makes them mad and sad that children die of hunger...

but does caring alone get anything accomplished?

No.

You might as well just quit wastin' your time and just say you really don't give a crap. Inaction is all you're really about if you don't do at least a small part to help.

Back to letter writin' -- one letter plus someone else's letter multiplied exponentially, that could mean something. And no, not freakin' e-mail because in essentially one brisk click hundreds of e-mails can be deleted and never even opened. The same is true with letters, I suppose... but an actual letter is more likely to be read than some e-mail. It might sit on someone's desk just calling out to be reread. Maybe whoever you've written it to will put it in a briefcase and take it home and ponder it there. Stacks of letters makes a statement. How exactly do e-mails stack up on your office floor if they're all in one computer? An e-mail won't have that power to be so personal. You can put your emotions into an e-mail but on paper, in an envelope that's been personally addressed, they mean more. You have actually taken the time to truly reach out to someone to let them know how you feel. I know, doing an e-mail can also be taking the time to actually reach out to someone... but it's just not the same.

Look, don't just blog your complaint and think you've done your part. How is that actually trying to accomplish change?!??
You might think that's a good thing. You might feel better when you turn off the light at night to go to sleep or do whatever you do in the privacy of your bed... or on your webcam for the whole internet to see, hey, whatever you're into, I'm not gonna judge at the moment... all I'm a freakin' sayin' is COMPLAINING AND THAT'S THE END OF STORY will get NOTHING accomplished as far as bringing about the change that you want to see.

It almost makes sense that if you don't try your small part in fixing what you want fixed, then you have NO right to complain. But of course you have the right to complain, well, especially here in the United States of America. In Iran... or Cuba... or North Korea... not so fast there, loudmouth. People in those nations can't even complain much less actually do something to bring about change. The same was true under the Taliban rule in Afghanistan... and the same was true under Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Amazing, huh, not even being able to complain without fear of persecution. But here, as much as the Constitution is being "shredded" by our "idiot" President, you very much STILL DO HAVE THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN!!!

But wait, there's more!!!! It goes BEYOND that -- here you have the right to actually do something to bring about change. You might face huge odds and what you want to accomplish might never get accomplished at all... but complaining and leaving it at that means you're not even trying.

So, yeah, while you have the right to complain, if you don't do anything else other than that, just shut the ... up, capisce?

15°F was balmy compared to my last checking of the thermometer...

But now we have achieved unity in the universe, where America meets the world to join as one...

F has met C.

Untitled Tuesday Run & Tunes

Neal McCoy - At This Moment (1991, debut, Out of Print... I think.)
Hoo-ahhhhh... it got a wee bit chillier!!

Really it's absolutely insanely cold!!

-34°F right now (-37°C)

The town is half dead it seems. Probably more like mostly dead. So many people almost stop everything or at least as much as possible when the temps are like this. Work was so quiet today. Spent more time in the station than in the ambulance and on calls.

As soon as my shift was over at 9 o'clock, I changed clothes and headed over to the University to get another run in tonight. On the way there the streets were nearly empty. Like a ghost town, in a way. Rec Center was also dead. Often it's hopping with people, lifting weights, running, maybe some basketball or just hanging out. Not tonight. This weather has got people hibernatin', I tell ya what. Soon as it warms up a little, when it's up to about fifteen below or so, life'll start poppin' again. Not right now.

In any case, I got my run in, suffered through the walk from inside back to my truck and when I got back to my house -- heaven... well, it was once I got some logs goin' in the stove. Cleaned up, made some Irish coffee, paid plenty of attention to my dog, now time to rest!

Why January 1st? Just seems like a day that makes the most sense. Maybe Christmas.

Nice run but not easy. I'm not sure why 15 to 16 minutes isn't easy for me. It's such a tiny amount of time yet half way through I'm thinkin' about it being over already. Maybe it's the extra weight I'm a carryin'. Maybe that's makin' me lumber through the last part of each run. Maybe if that weight goes bye bye then running will be easier for me. Just gotta keep tryin' to get rid of it... something else that just ain't easy. Still I'll keep up the running, probably until it kills me.

Through the years I've heard a few songs by Texas native Neal McCoy... and I've liked 'em. So, like I often do, I thought I'd go back to where it started for him. There aren't many copies of his Out of Print debut floating around, but they are findable. Unfortunately, I'm not too sure I like this all that much. The last decade of the 20th Century was an interesting one for country music with Garth Brooks purely leading the way. At This Moment from Neal McCoy was a small part of that new modern country charge through the 1990's. The lyrics here come from a whole host of writers and the usual topics are covered. Plenty of love, loss, and life. Some nice ballads here but not much that really rocks which is too bad, methinks. I suppose it's a decent album but not one that got a lot of notice at the time. Still it solidified Neal McCoy as one who will have the ability to last through the years. He may never have seen the popularity or fame that Garth got or many later on, but he's a good solid singer who, in many of the songs here, harkens back to a traditional country sound while looking ahead to the 2000's. A lot of this makes me feel Texas and that's how I like my country.
