Monkeys in the Arctic? Monkeys in Washington!

It's time for me to complain again. Or not. I really, really, really don't want to. But our GREAT nation keeps heading nowhere except toward socialist financial ruin. To ignore that would irresponsible. All our damn president wants to do is grow the government to preposterous proportions. In order to help everyone, he's launched an attack on those who make more money: they should be responsible for paying for most of America -- Raise Their Taxes. Where does this idea even come from??!!

"Knock knock."

"Hello. May I help you?"

"We're the government. According to our records, you make more money than your neighbors."

"Yes, I've been fortunate and I've been able to be successful."

"Since you make more, we're forcing you to give more of what you earned back to us so we can use it to help others."

It's not fair, it's blatantly wrong, and most importantly, it's going to do so much damage to the economy. And then you've got fools who say it's not really raising taxes. Going from 35% to 39.6%, "that's just letting tax breaks expire and it's not really raising them." What?!?! 35 to almost 40 IS going UP.

WAKE UP!!!!!!!! This idiotic dooshbag and his stooge Congress are doing so much harm. We're so screwed.

For this run I was ill-prepared but I got it done... somehow. I just did not have the energy that I would have liked to've had. On top of that, I think I was a little more tired than I should've been for such a run. It just wasn't as easy as other similar runs. Less than two minutes in (!!!) I was already wanting to quit, quit, quit, quit, quit. That thought so early was easy to push away but it returned soon enough. I really don't know how I pushed on to over 25 minutes. I got it accomplished though. By the end, all I wanted to do was sit and sleep and wake up whenever and then stagger back home. My ass was draggin', my feet were draggin', I don't want to be sitting here now typing this, I just want to be dead... well, uhh, maybe just laying down in the most supreme state of vegging out.

In order to have 10 runs and 4 hours for the month, am I really gonna do this tomorrow??? Ay caramba. I wish I could hire someone to exercise for me. I suppose that wouldn't really do much for my physical health, though, eh?

Good news is I've had my Best Month Ever. I just wish I had the energy to be more excited about it.

To new music I really don't pay much attention. Somewhere, sometime I heard of these guys. I didn't hear them, not a single song I don't think, but became aware of the fact that they're a newly popular band who people seem to be digging. Apparently their debut is a fastest selling British debut and it won some awards, and this, their second (and currently most recent) album, is another that was nominated for and/or won awards, also. Okay, that's all well and good (as I don't really put much (any?) stock in awards) but it doesn't mean I'll enjoy their music... but still I thought I'd maybe possibly give them a try someday. Finally the day got here and this isn't bad; I kinda like it. Most every song has a nice pace to it, not much is mellow. It doesn't approach punk rock speed which is also good. Jangly at times, a little darker at others. This is post-punk revival? Okay then. There's apparently also some criticism about this band as it seems they've been hyped and are more style than substance. I didn't think that at all, maybe because there was obviously a lot of production involved in the recording of these songs. This is slick Indie but definitely not Lo-fi garage rock. No matter what it is, it's not bad and I'll probably check other albums of their out in the future.

** THE ABRIDGED VERSION**

From where?

In the late 1800's and early 1900's there was a group of super wealthy American capitalist known as the Robber Barons. Our elected leaders realized that if they did not pass some major legislation the Robber Barons would eventually own every inch of land in America and our founding fathers vision of an egalitarian democratic republic would be destroyed, and our Constitution would be worthless. So in 1913 they passed the sixteenth amendment to the Constitution and a highly progressive tax system. (-- the tax rate increases as the taxable amount increases. You have MORE = you can afford to pay MORE.)

Obviously, I have no problem with people whose yearly income exceeds $250,000 paying the 39.6% rate they were before the Bush tax cuts. As far as being "fortunate and I've been able to be successful", fine - you enjoy a much better piece of the American Dream, you should be responsible for slightly more of the cost of the upkeep.

(Whether any of the revenue collected as "income tax" actually goes anywhere but to The Fed to pay off the "national debt" is a different discussion.)

Anonymous said...

Dude. I don't know what you are doing now, but wtf? You were living in Alaska doing EMT work. Do you really have to worry about getting taxed at a higher rate? The last time I checked EMTs were getting payed something like $13 bucks an hour. It's $250,000 a year that gets a higher rate, everybody else gets a tax CUT. My household is over the $250,000 threshold for the first year ever and we might grumble a little about the higher taxes, but we understand that if you want to have bridges that don't collapse, police forces that keeping you safe, mass transit that gets you to work, a military that protects you, even EMTs that come when you crash your car or have a heart attack, you need to pay taxes. And a tax break for those under the $250K level seems like a pretty good idea to me. Let us folks who are lucky enough to be in the top 2% take a greater share of the burden.

"You have MORE = you can afford to pay MORE."

Is this really true? If you happen to earn enough to be in the next tax bracket, does that automatically mean you can afford to pay those extra taxes?

Are you taking into account any potential financial situations in that taxpayers life?

Cost of living in New York City, the NY metro area or other costly locations throughout America. Medical bills for a child, an elderly parent, or for spouse or self. College tuition for one or more children. Cost to pay workers who are under your employ in the small business you own. I'm sure there are many that are legitimate such as those. All of a sudden having to pay more to the government can be a burden to many people. No, just because you're able to be in that tax bracket, that doesn't mean you can automatically afford those higher taxes.

"you enjoy a much better piece of the American Dream, you should be responsible for slightly more of the cost of the upkeep."

"Let us folks who are lucky enough to be in the top 2% take a greater share of the burden.

I don't want anyone to have to have a greater share of the burden.

If Neighbor A makes $245,000 and next door Neighbor B makes $251,000, Neighbor B should really be required to pay more for the upkeep of nuclear missiles? That person should be required to pay more to help people who signed for mortgages they couldn't afford? That person should be required to pay more for a Buffalo Bill museum in Cody, Wyoming or for the preservation of a marsh frog? Why should that that person be required to be responsible for a greater share of the International Space Station? Does Neighbor B use it more than Neighbor A?!? Neighbor B is essentially no different from Neighbor A. They might even live in identical homes in the same cookie cutter neighborhood. They might own the same car. But just because Neighbor B is fortunate to earn 6 more thousand a year, that person should be more responsible for the upkeep of America?

This just makes no sense.

If the "rich" can afford to pay more, why doesn't the government get MORE involved in things like the mortgage business, the automobile industry, and colleges and hospitals? Think of how much money they could force people to pay for things!

When you want to buy something, they can check your income records and charge you accordingly. If someone can afford to pay $190,000 for a Ford Focus, why not force them to?! Or $340,000 a semester for college? The multi-millionaire can afford it, right? And the person making $400,000 a year can surely afford a $45 Tylenol in the hospital.

"Do you really have to worry about getting taxed at a higher rate?"

I don't have to worry about it at all but I care about fairness amongst everyday common citizens. If I did make that much, I'd be pretty pissed off that I'd be punished for being more successful. This new tax bracket doesn't affect just the mega-wealthy.

I'm also concerned at how the money is going to be spent... as all Americans should.

It's not just for the upkeep of America. It's not just for "bridges that don't collapse, police forces that keeping you safe, mass transit that gets you to work, a military that protects you, even EMTs that come when you crash your car or have a heart attack" . . . but it's also to give to the poor. When someone takes money and gives to ease suffering, that is charity. Our government is in that business big time and they want to be in it EVEN MORE.

I'm ALL for people not suffering, but giving should be a CHOICE, not something forced upon the American citizen. I am all for a person giving as much as they can stand to give, even to the point of sacrificing luxuries so that others can simply live or have less suffering in their lives, but I'm also for the FREEDOM to never give a single damn cent to charity.

Yes, let's all pay a tax to build up the infrastructure of America and let's have a strong and ready military, hopefully to be used for good in the world to help others, but this government has got to stop unfairly stealing from people who work hard to earn a living and giving to those who don't. Just because you earn $6,000 more than your neighbor doesn't mean you ought to be treated any differently... and it doesn't mean you use a higher percentage of services that taxes go toward.

Fairness in taxation is what we need. Not simply taking "because you make more."

Part of that upkeep shouldn't be a bunch of lazy inefficient pieces of shit expecting a handout because their skin color is darker than mine.

Goddam there is a lot of hate in this blog! (but there was always an underbelly of hate in the deadhead scene anyway, so at least this blog is refreshingly honest.)

Deadman, even in Manhattan $250k is still $250k (ie. not shit.) Obviously $250k isn't the same as it would be in Bugtussle, TN, but you can still lead a good life. Anywhere in America, if $250k is shit, then so is $450k or $650k because that shit is in the head not in the bank. By the way, tell the Grand Imperial Wizard I say hi and I'm sorry that I missed the last cross-burning.

Zooma, since all you do is bitch, bitch, bitch about what Obama is doing wrong ,then please tell us what the solution is to our problems both as an economy and sick society in general. Who is that brilliant ideal leader who you're so bummed isn't leading us right now?

Are you a Reagan guy? Do you think arms for hostages was where its at? Do you agree with him that AIDS was God's way of killing the heathen homosexual? Do you think that trickle-down economics was where it's at? Will the working poor only really have their lives improved by giving all of the benefits only to the super-wealthy?

Are you a Ross Perot man? Do you want to put the country's fate in the hands of ruthless crack-pot entrepreneur. Did you like his management style of wire-tapping his own employees. Is that the kind of man we need in the white house right now?

How about a Ron Paul man? I hope you share his religious and social views exactly, because if not then please note that God hates you and you are going to hell.

Is it McCain that we need right now? We saw that great man in action in September and October flip-flopping like John Kerry on bathtub speed. Are you proud of how he sucked it up and hung with his dear, dear friends at Liberty University and Bob Jones U (but no inter-racial dating please.) It's too bad the election isn't happening now because he could have chosen the octomom instead of the hockey mom for his veep (and he just might have done it.)

How about the Clintons, Jimmy Carter, any Kennedy, Nixon, Eisenhower, the Roosevelts, Lincoln, Washington, Gandhi, Mother Theresa. I can tear them all down too. I can bitch about every one of them.

Come on Zooma enough bitch, bitch, bitching. Don't be the old man grousing at the pickle barrel, be the young man with new ideas. Who do you trust to get us out of this mess?

Speaking of neighbors...what about Neighbor C? Well, he isn't actually a "neighbor" because he doesn't live in the same gated community - he and his spouse work a combined three jobs, averaging 100 hours per week to make a combined yearly income of $34,600.

You don't understand the logic of a progressive tax system - those with more can afford to, and SHOULD pay more? And, what about Kelsey Grammer's neighbors? Bruce Springsteen's neighbors? Brad Pitt's? Paris Hilton's? Shouldn't they pay (at least) slightly more? Don't you think that their "American Dream" is better, and certainly worth more (to them) than the one Neighbor C is enjoying?

(Deadman) - "$250,000 a year isn't shit where I live." LUCKY you!

If we divided the income of the US into thirds, we find that the top ten percent of the population gets a third, the next thirty percent gets another third, and the bottom sixty percent get the last third. If we divide the wealth of the US into thirds, we find that the top one percent own a third, the next nine percent own another third, and the bottom ninety percent claim the rest. (Actually, these percentages, true a decade ago, are now out of date. The top one percent are now estimated to own between forty and fifty percent of the nation's wealth, more than the combined wealth of the bottom 95%.)

We know that the ownership of between forty and fifty percent of the nation's wealth does not require payment of between forty and fifty percent of the nation's tax burden - not even close, so maybe we could do well with a little less bitching and crying at the mere suggestion that they should start paying closer to their fair share.

"...required to pay more to help people who signed for mortgages they couldn't afford". Could it be that the banks take the blame here? They made bad loans intentionally - it was a scam - so that they could collect transactions fees, and do booming business on their way to meeting/beating quotas which earned them lavish bonuses. However, the real payoff was the intended foreclosure which then would allow wealthy fat bastards to purchase real estate for cents-on-the-dollar. Another transfer of wealth "upward" not unlike during the last great depression.

The ideal leader is the one who won't raise anyone's taxes and/or grow the government. If Obama did that then I'd trust and rejoice in his presidency and I wouldn't be bitching.

No, they shouldn't. If your only reason is because they can afford to pay higher taxes, that doesn't work.

Why does the millionaire deserve to pay more?

The harder you work, the more money you make, the more you must be required to pay for the welfare of others? Hell no.

The people with the most wealth don't work at all. Their wealth works - their income is from return on investment. (Which is why they tried to change the tax code to include income tax on WAGES only. Nice try.) Most of the REALLY wealthy - their ancestors exploited the hard work of others (research "Robber Barons") to amass their fortunes. They've been using their influence (lobbying, all the politicans they could buy) to write laws to increase their wealth/shift tax burden to the "middle class".

Why is it that (the rare exception when it's by choice) members of millionaire's families never fight (maybe even sacrifice their lives) in wars that ALLEGEDLY are fought to protect their freedom and the lavish lifestyle they enjoy? It seems this burden (like most of the tax burden) falls (HARD) on the middle and lower classes.

(Is that fair? Hell no.)

Intolerance within the "Deadhead" community, as well. Have any different ideas that go against what President Obama is doing? To some that is a baaaaaad person who deserves to be shunned and maybe even spat upon and definitely called many bad names. After all, what would dear old Jerry do? Who would dear old Jerry vote for? Aren't you going to do the same?!? No??!! Why not?!?! What's wrong with you?!!? You must be mentally imbalanced or something terrible like that.

Thankfully there are some Deadheads who will respect a fellow Deadhead who believes what Obama is doing is wrong for this country.

But sadly there are some who won't give that Deadhead the time of day. Nevermind if they can both sit down and love the hell out of Veneta '72 or any random show from '77. Dissent is no longer patriotic if it's against the Democrats in office. That dissent is just plain idiotic. Right?

Lucky you

You fuckin' betcha! Even luckier if I wasn't breaking my ass 24/7 for a chunk of that money, only to have Obama come along and tell me I have to give more of it to goverhment sponsored charity.

Deadman/Lucky - You've piqued my curiosity....no - I'm aroused!! I can't let it go. What would it be like to beat someone to whom $250,000 ain't shit into a coma?

And, this isn't about HATE. It's about shock and awe, and principle, and respect, and the illusion that you think you have the balls to suggest that "I run along and fuck myself". Why? Because you're a snivelling bigot? Because you're delusional about the last eight years - you believe that Texas shitheal wasn't the worst thing to happen to the world - yes, even worse than raygun if anyone can believe that?

I'm ambivalent - I truly sympathize (for those mentally addled), but, if given the chance, I will still beat you into a coma (and maybe, as the mood strikes, fuck you a couple of times first...) Now, YOU run along.

Zoooma said...

Wow. Disagree with Obama's direction for America and you simply must love Bush and Halliburton. It seems like that's the train of thought here.

Yes, that's logical.

I'm guessing that you do indeed believe "that Texas shitheal" was "the worst thing to happen to the world."

I'd point out the positives about Bush (and Reagan) but I'm guessing that you would just simply assume my level of delusion has left me mentally addled.

There's probably no point in pointing out positives concerning both of those Presidents... you're seemingly so close-minded and filled with so much blind hatred (especially for W.) otherwise you'd be able to recognize the good those men have done. I'd be willing to bet Obama's budget and accumulated deficit over the next 4 years that there's no way in hell you'd ever believe anything about Bush that doesn't slant to the extreme far left. You'd probably rather take a double barrel shotgun blast in the face than admit the good in America and the world that was accomplished by President Bush. (He probably has someone tie his shoes for him because he's so stoopid, right?)

Wait a minute. Isn't this post about what's happening right now? Yes -- dissent against Obama's direction in the here and now. Bush doesn't even have anything to do with this. Oh, that's right, -- anyone who expresses dissent against Obama must love W. And I think the new protocol for when someone speaks out against Obama is to automatically bring W into the conversation. I forgot. I'm sorry.

Anonymous said...

"Run along and fuck yourself, anonymous." - was the exact point in this thread at which the hostility on my part began. (Select your words carefully.) I will be civil and respectful if treated in kind.

"Obama's budget and accumulated deficit" - for the record, Bush turned a surplus into the largest deficit in history. One of his many accomplishments, no doubt?

Indeed this discussion is about "what's happening right now", but you cannot divorce the present from the history leading up to it. It is essential to understand the history before plotting any course for future action.

I'm not leading any Obama is right rally, either. I previously said I'm not thrilled with the concept of rewarding Wall Street criminals for their Ponzi Scheme - I would seek prison terms and restitution (- just short of execution to prevent enjoyment of their ill-gotten gains). Also, at the risk of my lack of expertise in economics showing, I don't understand how creating more debt - encouraging banks to lend to stimulate the economy immediately - will have a positive longterm impact. I just believe that it is premature to judge "Obama's direction in the here and now". It will take time before we can assess what worked and/or what failed.

Zoooma said...

There's that disease showing itself again.

"Indeed this discussion is about "what's happening right now", but you cannot divorce the present from the history leading up to it. It is essential to understand the history before plotting any course for future action."

But that doesn't mean one needs to selectively bring up the past practically every single time when talking about the present. Slavery is bad. There's no need to go into who endorsed it and when. The economy is bad and it needs to be fixed. No one needs to go into past failures. Understanding the past doesn't mean it needs to be referenced every time possible when talking about the man in charge fixing the problem now.

In the second place, I seriously doubt my ticket would be the one punched. I have yet to meet any Leftyloons that weren't limp-wristed.

A scant few have the good sense to see things the RIGHT way. But not many. Some with differing opinions are actually civil and would rather not get into a confrontation. Whoever this person is, they might be all for respecting other nations to the point of not dropping bombs on them to get rid of an evil dictator (probably believes Israel is the evil aggressor and Hamas is okie dokie) but when it comes to an American Deadhead (or any American?) with a differing point of view, I guess the gloves come off then, huh?!

"It’s a tragedy that the Israelis - a people who must understand better than almost anybody the horrors of oppression - are now acting as oppressors. As the great Jewish writer Primo Levi once remarked “Everybody has their Jews, and for the Israelis it’s the Palestinians”. By creating a middle Eastern version of the Warsaw ghetto they are recapitulating their own history as though they’ve forgotten it.

And by trying to paint an equivalence between the Palestinians - with their homemade rockets and stone-throwing teenagers - and themselves - with one of the most sophisticated military machines in the world - they sacrifice all credibility.

The Israelis are a gifted and resourceful people who fully deserve the right to live in peace, but who seem intent on squandering every chance to allow that to happen. It’s difficult to avoid the conclusion that this conflict serves the political and economic purposes of Israel so well that they have every interest in maintaining it.

While there is fighting they can continue to build illegal settlements. While there is fighting they continue to receive huge quantities of military aid from the United States. And while there is fighting they can avoid looking candidly at themselves and the ruthlessness into which they are descending.

Gaza is now an experiment in provocation. Stuff one and a half million people into a tiny space, stifle their access to water, electricity, food and medical treatment, destroy their livelihoods, and humiliate them regularly… and, surprise, surprise - they turn hostile. Now why would you want to make that experiment?

Because the hostility you provoke is the whole point. Now ‘under attack’ you can cast yourself as the victim, and call out the helicopter gunships and the F16 attack fighters and the heavy tanks and the guided missiles, and destroy yet more of the pathetic remains of infrastructure that the Palestinian state still has left. And then you can point to it as a hopeless case, unfit to govern itself, a terrorist state, a state with which you couldn’t possibly reach an accommodation.

And then you can carry on with business as usual, quietly stealing their homeland."

Yep.

And exactly what I expected to hear in reply.

The thing about most Deadheads is that they claim to be independent, free thinkers but when it comes down to it, there are very few surprises. Most aren't willing to look beyond their perception of how things SHOULD be and deal with the reality of how things ARE.

Too much dope smoke, maybe. Why do you think they call it dope?

Actually, it was just an observation, dipshit.

Did your parents have any children that lived?

Deadman - whenever your ignorance is exposed, you revert to name calling "dipshit" and inantile derogatory remarks "Did your parents have any children that lived?"

Speak then of predictability and "very few surprises".

("I support Israel and the Gazans got what they deserved..." - much more "opinion" than "observation".)

"Yeah, kind of along the lines of "I'm going to beat you into a coma", only less violent in nature." - well, no. In addition to the throw-away retaliatory comments, I've contributed facts concerning the origin of and necessity for the progressive tax system, the current (alarmingly inequitable) distribution of income and wealth in the U.S., a valid opinion that it is not wise to divorce the present from the history leading up to it, and a take on the Israelis/Palestinians conflict that is alternative to the U.S. main stream media's view. On the other hand, you wallow in name calling.

"I already won this round, stupid." - really think so? Don't let go of your dreams.

"And exactly what I expected to hear in reply." - amazing! It applies right here and now (and I didn't even say it).

Your March 4, 2009 8:35 AM post is just another example of "FREE THINKING"....or what passes as such in your world.

(Freethought holds that individuals should neither accept nor reject ideas proposed as truth without recourse to knowledge and reason. Thus, freethinkers strive to build their beliefs on the basis of facts, scientific inquiry, and logical principles, independent of any factual/logical fallacies or the intellectually-limiting effects of authority, cognitive bias, conventional wisdom, popular culture, prejudice, sectarianism, tradition, urban legend, and all other dogmatic or otherwise fallacious principles.

A line from "Clifford's Credo" by the 19th Century British mathematician and philosopher William Kingdon Clifford perhaps best describes the premise of freethought: "It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.")

....furthermore, you keep harping-on about violent behavior - the fact is, my behvior has been exactly as violent as yours -- lightly tapping on a keyboard.

We must both beware of those menacing verbal attacks from cyberspace.

"I can't possibly know as much as you" - BET YOUR LIFE ON THAT.

"you sound like all the other anonymous pieces of shit I've dealt with" - you swallowed...of course you did - that's the kind of man you are.

I'll give you the last word. (Wipe the overflow off you lips and chin with it.)

Think whatever you want.
