Well,
First, I sincerely hope that your perspective is feeling better today.
We probably don't agree (much) on healthcare reform. I haven't read the bill(s) and I admit that I am not at all familiar with any details.
I believe that we DO agree that it is unconstitutional for the Federal government to mandate the purchase of insurance. (No debate.)
Besides being UNconsitutional, that part, to me, poses another significant problem - it guarantess more clients for the insurance industry.
We differ in that I believe that every citizen IS entitled to healthcare and an education -- every other non-third world country is able to achieve this - why not "The GREATEST Nation In The History Of This Planet"? (GREED comes to mind.)
Is there ANY doubt that BIG insurance, BIG pharmaceutical, and BIG doctor have been quite comfortable exploiting the existing system? Consider their profits. (Follow the money, as I've suggested previously...) They are responsible for most of the negative bs and scare tactics swaying some opinions.
I believe that it is CRITICAL that a first step toward reform is taken. It's obvious the current system has to go. Hopefully, COMPLETE National Healthcare (- think France, Canada, England, Netherlands...) will soon follow.
Then, on to re-establishing regulation of Wall Street!

I didn't want to publish this comment because I've decided you're not welcome here if you think 9/11 was an inside job. Maybe this'll be the last unless you rethink that. I want to have tolerance for all but something that has deeply affected me and so many Americans, to call that an inside job is disrespectful and wrong.
Anyway, if you comment on that paragraph, it won't be read, it will be deleted.
But this I have to say concerning this post -- health care is not a right guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America. I'm not sure an education is a right either but this nation provides schools and teachers for every child and they are required to go to school. The school system is horrible in many places but that isn't the issue. A college education is certainly NOT a right. It does not matter whether or not health care and college is provided by other countries. We are the United States and we do not need to follow what others do. I am ALL for EVERYONE having access to affordable health care and I am ALL for everyone having access to a college education. But the second you start taxing others in order to freely hand that out to people, that just ain't right, Jack. We came to America to work and make a living, not to be robbed from. We came to America to be free. If we want to help our neighbors, that should ALWAYS be OUR CHOICE. (Do you seriously see something wrong with that?) It is NOT the government's role to provide provide provide. Where would it stop? No one should live on the street. Everyone should have a nice place to live. Everyone should have a job. What if someone can't get to work i.e. no car or no public transportation? Everyone should have car. No one should be hungry. Everyone should have enough food to eat. No one should be wearing rags or have holes in their shoes. Everyone should have decent clothing. Give give give? Where's the incentive for anyone to get off their ass and make themselves a success, especially if they have to turn over much of what they make to the government to pay for the welfare of all? Sheesh. Personal responsibility we need to get back to. Complete National Health care is NOT Constitutional. If you're not for the Constitution then please leave America.

P.S. did I mention that complete national health care is NOT a right in the Constitution? Government should do everything to help people, regulate the crap out of the insurance companies, but don't take them over and don't just say, "Surgery, Mr. Jones? No problem, it's on us" because if I don't want to help pay for Mr. Jones' surgery, I should not have to. That's B.S. and you know it.

Zinn favored socialism and I think he'd support only wars where the number of civilian deaths was zero. What would happen if no wars were fought? Evil, like Hitler, would reign supreme across the globe.
Try reading A Patriot's History of the United States by Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen. You might learn a few things.
Reading one but not the other is about as close minded as it gets.
