Thank God the Communist Games Are Over! Time to Mutter

USA Olympic Rings11:00 a.m. and the Olympics are over. Of course NBC isn't gonna show the Closing Ceremony until 8 o'clock tonight because they're dorks but what are ya gonna do? Not really all about the events themselves; all about ratings, isn't it?

At least this morning/last night I got to watch the USA men's basketball team win Gold against EspaƱa. The one-time Olympian Gold Medal winner wannabe in me loved seeing not just the game but the medal ceremony and celebrations afterwards.

USA Basketball Gold Medal Winners - Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Boozer, Jason Kidd, Dwyane Wade, Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh, Michael Redd with Coach K
Coach K and the team's Gold Medals

I just wish it wasn't from 3 until nearly 5 in the morning. Now today I'm way too tired. Oh well.

I also wish it wasn't in Communist China. The Olympics being there was all wrong. Such a pathetic, despicable government who treats human beings like dirt. They do deserve to have nuclear bombs dropped on them. If the bombs would just kill the Commies and have no collateral damage, leaving the citizens alone... and not cause any environmental destruction... hmmm...... actually no, No Nukes, not now, not ever. But China needs to change.
Beijing Olympics = WRONG because of China's record of extreme human rights abuses.
Well, even though I don't really give that much of a crap about the stoopid Summer Games, at least next time it'll be in London, Great Britain.

I wish I'd thought of Fletch's Afro - and I loved the picture you included. I'm always surprised when you & I match, but this week we did on two of them: #6 and #8.
Every time I watch the summer Olympics, I'm a medal-wannabe. Although I'm old enough to be Dara Torres's mother, I figure one is never too old to dream.

I haven't watched one minute of the Olympics and it was painful to not watch. I LOVE the Olympics, too.

Anyhow, great mutterings.

I wouldn't mind all of the recent self-righteous, holier-than-thou, China-bashing if it weren't so hypocritical. While I do not condone China's human rights record, a country like the United States has its own impressive legacy of human rights violations--Americans vis-a-vis their government continue to support overseas regimes that are responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people. Historically, Americans have trafficked opium into China with the intent of securing a favorable trade status by cultivating addiction among the Chinese, have supported the illegal takeover of lands belonging to sovereign peoples such as the Hawaiians and Filipinos, have institutionalized racism vis-a-vis naturalization laws, immigration exclusion laws, anti-miscegenation laws, alien land laws, and so on. And wasn't the failed response following Hurricane Katrina just a more recent human rights violation?

Jerry would be ashamed of your conservatism.

I'm so glad that Jerry, before he died, hired you to tell people what he would and wouldn't think after his death.

Since you're assuming what he'd think, I suppose I will, too. He drove a BMW, he supported capitalism, and I'd like to think he would support someone speaking out about the need for governments to treat their citizens not like ants but like real live human beings. Then again, Garcia was a flawed man who was a horrible father and who didn't take care of himself so maybe he simply wouldn't give a shit if Communist China kills people for petty crimes or puts them in prison for speaking out against the government or having a church service in their home.

If you honestly think the United States, or citizens of, should never criticize human rights abuses because they've had their own problems in the past, then you're fucking nuts.

What should I do? Should I shut my mouth because I'm an American? Should I ignore the suffering of others who are not Americans? Perhaps we should all close our eyes -- can't see it then it's okay, right? Or perhaps even if we can see it then we should just shut the hell up because we're guilty of human rights abuses, as well?

Last time I checked, here in the U.S. we have rights that everyone should have. People in China don't have those rights. But we should just allow that to happen????????????? We should allow nations to throw people in prison without cause or for something as innocent as speaking their mind? China and other nations like North Korea truly treat people like piece of shit possessions and it doesn't matter if they exist freely, or in prison, or in a grave. People in Cuba and North Korea can't even go somewhere for a vacation or maybe to visit a family member in the hospital. Then again, unless they're privileged party members, they can't have a job that will allow them to afford such a trip. In North Korea they need permission to travel within the country they live in. In North Korea, police can also enter anyone's house at any time and if you're doing something not permitted, like listening to music that's not about the Dear Leader or watching a videotape of a soap opera from South Korea, you, and your whole family, can be taken away to a work camp i.e. prison. An American criticizing that is hypocritical? Give me a break.

And calling the response to Katrina a violation of human rights, that's a stretch. Shit happens. Idiots run our governments and idiots didn't do the right things ... not quite the same as human rights abuses in China and other places. Compare Katrina to the cyclone response in Burma recently. I'll guarantee you there are still bodies rotting on the sides of the road and there are still places that no one has gone to help the citizens. Nothing. Not a single thing. But since Katrina happened then Americans have NO RIGHT to be concerned for the citizens in Myanmar, right?

Bottom line is the United States of America is a crappy place in many ways but in more ways it is perhaps the Greatest country on Earth... oh, and one of the freest nations on Earth, as well, with one of the BEST human rights records. Number of countries? Over 200? The U.S. is in the top 10 or 15. Not bad, eh? But wait. Should we have a record that is 100% spotless before we can criticize anyone else? Well? Huh? NO! That's insane.

But... I guess Jerry, if he were alive, would support his fellow citizens keeping their mouths shut -- Fuck the world and just keep buying concert tickets and t-shirts and albums so he can keep paying the mortgage.

Yeah, you're right, the U.S. stole Hawai'i so Jerry would be ashamed of me for being concerned for those human beings living under such horrendous and oppressive conditions. (Hmmm... I wonder why the Dead played shows in Hawaii... so did the Jerry Garcia Band and Jerry regularly vacationed there. Hmmm... I guess he didn't mind so much about Hawai'i. What an asshole.) Anyway... I suppose I'm still such a stoopid American. I'm sorry, Jerry.

Deadman, That was really rude of you to say that about my friend Daisy. I think that if the comment was hers, she would use her name and that comment doesn't sound like her, anyway. No need for name calling.

Yeah, you're right, it was.

Sorry to shit up your site with my personal venom, Zoooma... Not really sure what came over me. A momentary lapse of reason, I guess...

Deadman -- no worries.

But you still might be right about Deadheads who presume to speak for Jerry -- They've got no minds of their own.

one says one number and the other another
but they were set at the same time. Hmmm...
